Building a Shed Foundation With Concrete Blocks

A surprising number of sheds fail not because of rot or bad framing, but because they were set on dirt and left to sink unevenly. Building a shed foundation with concrete blocks solves that problem for a fraction of the cost of a poured slab, and a careful DIYer can finish the job in a single afternoon. Done right, a block foundation keeps the floor frame dry, level, and ventilated for decades. Done wrong — blocks dropped on grass with no base preparation — it starts racking doors out of square within the first year. The difference comes down to layout, bearing, and a few inches of compacted gravel.

When Concrete Blocks Are the Right Choice

Solid concrete blocks work best for sheds up to about 12 x 16 feet that sit on reasonably level, well-drained ground. The block approach shines for prefab and kit sheds with built-in floor joists, because the frame only needs point support every few feet. If you are storing a riding mower, garden tools, and bikes, blocks are plenty. Heavier uses change the math. A shed housing a woodworking shop with stationary machines, or anything with a concrete-hungry load like a motorcycle lift, deserves a poured slab or poured piers below frost depth.

Sloped sites are the other limit. Blocks can absorb 8 inches or so of grade change if you stack and shim carefully, but beyond that the stacks get tippy and you should switch to a post-and-beam foundation with buried footings. Check your local code, too — many jurisdictions allow floating block foundations for accessory buildings under 200 sq ft without a permit, while larger structures trigger footing requirements.

Which Blocks to Use (and Which to Avoid)

Use solid concrete blocks, sometimes sold as cap blocks or patio blocks, in 4 x 8 x 16 inch or 2 x 8 x 16 inch sizes. Solid 4-inch blocks run about $2 to $4 each at Home Depot or Lowe’s, and the thin 2-inch caps around $1.50 to $2.50. Combining the two thicknesses lets you fine-tune height in 2-inch increments before you ever reach for shims.

Avoid standard hollow-core CMU blocks laid with the cores facing sideways. Loaded across their webs, hollow blocks can crack and split under a concentrated joist load. If you want the height of an 8-inch CMU, set it cores-up so the webs bear vertically, then cap it with a solid 2-inch or 4-inch block to spread the load. Never use lightweight retaining-wall blocks or cinder-type blocks with visible voids; they crumble under point loads and wick moisture.

Planning the Block Layout

Block spacing depends on the shed’s floor framing. Most kit sheds use 2×6 joists over two or three 4×4 skids. Support each skid at intervals of 4 to 6 feet, and always place a block within 12 inches of each end. A typical 8 x 12 shed needs two skids with three blocks each — six stacks total. A 10 x 16 shed wants three skids with four blocks each, or twelve stacks. When in doubt, add stacks; blocks are cheap and sagging floors are not.

Preparing the Ground Under Each Block

This step separates foundations that last from foundations that sink. At each marked position, dig out a square roughly 18 x 18 inches and 4 to 6 inches deep, removing all sod and organic topsoil. Organic material decomposes and compresses; blocks set on it will settle unevenly no matter how carefully you level them. Fill each excavation with 3/4-inch crushed stone or paver base — not rounded pea gravel, which shifts — and compact it hard with a hand tamper. The crushed stone spreads the load, drains water away from the block, and resists frost movement far better than bare soil.

In cold climates, frost heave is the enemy. A floating block foundation will rise and fall slightly with deep freezes, which is acceptable for a shed as long as all the blocks move together. Consistent gravel depth under every block is what keeps the movement uniform. Some builders in Minnesota and upstate New York go 8 to 12 inches deep with gravel under each stack for extra insurance.

Setting and Leveling the Blocks

Start with the block at the highest corner of the site and set it directly on the compacted gravel. Every other block gets leveled to this one. Run a string line with a line level, or better, use a 6-foot level on a straight 2×4 spanning between stacks. Adjust height by adding or removing gravel and by swapping between 4-inch and 2-inch blocks. Each individual block must also sit dead level side-to-side and front-to-back; check with a torpedo level and tap high corners down with a rubber mallet.

For final fine-tuning, composite shims rated for ground contact work well between the block and the skid. Never stack wood scraps or bricks-on-edge to make up height. If a stack needs more than about 8 inches of height, widen its base: set a 16 x 16 inch pad of two blocks side by side, then stack pyramid-style. Tall single-block towers can kick out sideways when the shed racks in wind.

Setting the Shed Frame on the Blocks

Lay pressure-treated 4×4 or 4×6 skids across the block rows, crown up, and confirm level once more before framing or setting the shed. Slip a strip of asphalt shingle or an EPDM isolation pad between each block and the skid; it blocks capillary moisture and stops the slight abrasion that occurs as the frame expands and contracts. In hurricane and high-wind regions, anchor the shed with ground augers and steel strapping at each corner, since a block foundation offers no uplift resistance by itself. A 30-inch earth auger anchor rated at 1,200 pounds costs about $15, and four of them satisfy most local wind-anchoring rules.

Cost Breakdown and Time Estimate

For a typical 8 x 12 shed, expect around $120 to $200 in materials: six to eight solid blocks ($20 to $30), five bags of paver base or a small crushed-stone delivery ($30 to $60), two treated 4×4 skids ($40 to $60), shims, and anchors. Compare that with $800 to $2,400 for a contractor-poured 8 x 12 slab, and the appeal is obvious. Labor is one person-day: two hours of layout and digging, an hour of tamping gravel, and two hours of setting and leveling blocks. Rent a plate compactor for $60 if you are doing a larger footprint and want the gravel consolidated fast.

Mistakes That Sink Block Foundations

Three errors account for nearly every failed block foundation. First, setting blocks on sod or topsoil — the shed settles 1 to 2 inches in the first wet season and doors stop latching. Second, spacing stacks too far apart, which lets skids sag between supports and produces a bouncy, wavy floor. Third, ignoring drainage: if roof runoff pools around the blocks, the gravel base stays saturated and loses bearing strength while the skids wick moisture. Extend downspout splash blocks away from the foundation and, on damp sites, grade a slight crown under the shed before you begin.

Get those three things right — mineral soil, tight spacing, dry ground — and a concrete block foundation will outlast the shed sitting on it. Recheck level once a year in early summer, shim any stack that has crept, and the whole system remains serviceable indefinitely. If a stack does settle, the repair is refreshingly simple: lift that section of the shed an inch with a bottle jack and a 4×4 cribbing block, pull the low block, add and tamp fresh crushed stone, and reset — twenty minutes, no concrete truck, no demolition. That easy serviceability, as much as the low upfront cost, is why block foundations remain the default recommendation for backyard sheds on decent ground.
