Poured Slabs Versus Concrete Pavers

The first decision is between a monolithic poured slab and individual concrete pavers. A poured slab is a continuous surface, formed and cast in place, giving a smooth, seamless finish that suits driveways and large patios. Concrete pavers are precast interlocking units set on a compacted base, creating a segmented surface that flexes with ground movement and can be lifted and reset if one cracks or settles.

Each approach has clear strengths. Poured concrete costs less per square foot and installs faster over large areas, but it cracks along its own lines as the ground shifts and freeze-thaw cycles work on it. Pavers cost more upfront and take longer to lay, yet they resist cracking because the joints absorb movement, and individual units are repairable. Base Preparation Determines Everything

The most important part of any concrete paving project is invisible once the job is done: the base. A properly compacted sub-base of crushed gravel, typically 4 to 8 inches deep depending on load and soil, distributes weight and provides drainage so the concrete does not heave or sink. Skimping here is the single biggest cause of cracked driveways and sunken patios.

Excavate to the right depth, remove soft or organic soil, and compact the gravel in lifts with a plate compactor rather than dumping it all at once. On expansive clay or poorly draining soils, add extra base and ensure water can escape. Larger pours, driveways, and anything requiring a smooth decorative finish reward professional experience, and a crew can place, screed, and finish a big slab far faster than the concrete allows an amateur to work. Get multiple bids, confirm the contractor’s base prep and thickness in writing, and remember that the cheapest quote that shortcuts the gravel base will cost far more in cracks down the road.

Maintaining and Repairing Concrete Over Time

Concrete is low-maintenance but not maintenance-free, and a little attention extends its life considerably. Keep the surface clean of oil, leaves, and standing water, since organic staining and moisture accelerate wear. Reseal every two to three years, especially in freeze-thaw climates, to keep water from penetrating the surface and expanding as it freezes, which causes the flaking known as scaling. In winter, avoid rock-salt de-icers on newer concrete and use sand for traction or a concrete-safe de-icer instead.

Small cracks are normal and easy to address before they grow. Clean out the crack, then fill hairline cracks with a concrete crack sealer or a self-leveling polyurethane caulk for wider ones, which flexes with seasonal movement. Larger cracks, spalled areas where the surface has chipped away, and settled sections call for a patching compound or resurfacer, and badly heaved or crumbling slabs may need mudjacking or replacement. Pavers cost more than poured concrete but resist cracking and are individually repairable. Gravel is cheapest of all but requires periodic replenishment and containment.
