Pool decks live the hardest life of any slab on your property — soaked daily with chlorinated or salt water, baked to 140°F in afternoon sun, then frozen solid in winter across half the country. So when the surface starts flaking, cracking, or tilting toward the coping, that’s chemistry and physics doing exactly what they do. The good news about concrete pool deck repair is that almost none of it requires demolition: the vast majority of failed decks are fixed with targeted crack work, spall patching, or a resurfacing overlay for a fraction of replacement cost. Here’s how to diagnose what you’re seeing and what each fix runs.
Diagnose Before You Buy Anything
Three failure modes cover nearly every pool deck. Surface problems — flaking, pitting, pop-outs, chalky wear — mean the top layer is failing but the slab is sound. Cracks fall into two camps: stable shrinkage cracks that stay hairline for years, and structural cracks that widen, offset vertically, or run to the pool’s bond beam. Settlement shows up as sections tipping toward or away from the pool, trip lips at joints, and puddles that drain toward the water. Each gets a different repair, and mixing them up wastes money — resurfacing over a sinking slab, for example, just gives you a beautiful crack six months later. It also pays to identify why the surface failed before treating any fix as final: a deck that spalled from a bad original finish needs different insurance than one being eaten by salt splash-out, and a crack caused by a tree root simply returns unless the root is addressed. Fixing Spalling and Surface Deterioration

Sunken or Tilted Sections

Saltwater chlorination is wonderful for swimmers and brutal on concrete. Salt splash-out concentrates as water evaporates at the deck surface, crystallizing in the pores and mechanically wedging the surface apart — the same physics as road-salt damage, running year-round. If your deck shows a ring of deterioration in the first three feet around the waterline, that’s the signature. Expect scheduling to cluster in spring; booking a fall slot commonly saves 10 to 15 percent.
Repair vs. Replace
Replacement earns its cost only when the slab itself is structurally done: cracks fracturing the deck into shifting islands, severe settlement from ongoing soil problems, or a deck too thin and steel-free to hold an overlay. If more than half the deck is heaving and dropping seasonally, stop investing in surface fixes. Otherwise the repair hierarchy is remarkably kind to your budget — seal and caulk this weekend for under $100, level a sunken corner for under $1,000, resurface the whole thing for a few thousand.
