This number matters because it determines how you position the molding in your saw. Before you cut a single piece, find your crown’s spring angle by setting a scrap into a framing square: the profile fits at either 45/45 or the more common 52/38 orientation.

Once you know the spring angle, you have two ways to cut it: nested (upside down and backward against the saw fence, the traditional method) or flat on the table using compound miter angles. Beginners get more consistent results cutting nested, so that is what I recommend below.

The Nested Method: Position Crown Upside Down

The single most important trick for cutting crown molding corners on a standard miter saw is to place the molding upside down and backward against the fence, exactly as it will orient relative to the ceiling and wall. Inside Corners: Miter or Cope

Mitering the inside corner

Cut each piece at 45 degrees in opposite directions so the front faces meet cleanly at the point. It is far easier to trim a hair than to add material back.
