Deck Joist Span Chart: Sizes, Spacing, and Load Guide

Getting your joist sizing wrong means a bouncy deck at best and a structural failure at worst. A reliable deck joist span chart tells you exactly how far each joist size can span between supports based on lumber species, grade, and spacing. Whether you are building a new deck or checking if an existing one is up to code, this guide gives you the numbers you need along with the context to apply them correctly.

Residential Deck Joist Span Table

The spans below are based on a 40 psf live load and 10 psf dead load, which is the standard residential deck requirement per the International Residential Code (IRC). All values assume No. 2 grade or better lumber.

How to Read a Deck Joist Span Chart

The span is the distance between the inside faces of the supports — typically the ledger board and a beam. It is not the total joist length, which needs to include any overhang or cantilever. OC stands for “on center,” meaning the measurement from the center of one joist to the center of the next.

Closer spacing (12″ OC) allows longer spans because the load distributes across more joists. Wider spacing (24″ OC) reduces the allowable span but uses less lumber. Most residential decks use 16″ OC as the standard balance between material cost and structural performance.

Choosing the Right Joist Size

Start with your span requirement. Measure the distance from where the deck attaches to the house to where your beam will sit. Find that distance in the deck joist span chart and work backward to the minimum joist size and spacing.

For example, if your span is 12 feet and you want 16″ OC spacing, a 2×8 in Southern Pine barely makes it at 11 ft 10 in. Going up to 2×10 gives you 14 ft 0 in of allowable span, providing a comfortable safety margin. Always size up when you are close to the limit.

Factors That Affect Joist Span

  • Lumber species — Southern Pine and Douglas Fir are stiffer and stronger than SPF or Hem-Fir. Tropical hardwoods like Ipe have even higher values but require steel joist hangers rated for hardwood
  • Lumber grade — No. 1 grade allows slightly longer spans than No. 2. Select Structural is the strongest commonly available grade
  • Moisture content — Wet or green lumber has reduced span values. Use the spans for the condition at time of installation
  • Composite decking weight — Some composite deck boards weigh more than wood, increasing the dead load. Check the manufacturer’s span requirements for the decking material you plan to use
  • Hot tubs and heavy loads — A standard deck joist span chart assumes 40 psf live load. Hot tubs filled with water and people can exceed 100 psf, requiring an engineered solution with closer beam spacing or doubled joists

Cantilever Rules for Deck Joists

The IRC allows joists to cantilever (extend past the beam) up to one-quarter of the allowable span. A 2×10 Southern Pine joist at 16″ OC with a 14-foot span could cantilever up to 3 ft 6 in past the beam. This creates usable deck space without adding another beam, but the cantilever length must be subtracted from the back span to maintain structural integrity.

Blocking and Bracing Requirements

Joists spanning more than 8 feet require solid blocking or cross-bracing at midspan to prevent lateral rotation. Blocking is a short piece of the same joist material installed perpendicular between joists. It keeps them standing straight under load and prevents the deck boards from creating a wavy surface over time.

At the rim joist and ledger connections, use code-approved joist hangers rated for the joist size. Simpson Strong-Tie LUS series hangers are the industry standard. Never rely on toenailing alone for joist-to-beam connections.
