The reality is more complicated. The disadvantages of hickory flooring show up in workability, color consistency, refinishing tolerance, and price. Humidity Sensitivity Despite the Hardness
Hickory’s tangential expansion coefficient (0.00411) is higher than red oak (0.00369) or white oak (0.00365), meaning hickory moves more across the grain with seasonal humidity changes. Solid hickory in homes without active humidity control regularly cups in humid summers and gaps in dry winters.
The recommended indoor environment is 35 to 55 percent relative humidity year-round, maintained with a whole-home humidifier and HVAC dehumidification. Without that control, hickory cups more visibly than oak — the wide color variation accentuates any uneven board profile.
Difficult to Stain Uniformly
Hickory’s tight grain and density resist stain penetration. The sapwood absorbs differently than the heartwood, producing splotchy results with standard oil-based stains. Hickory’s defect rate means yields skew toward shorter boards. Average lengths in solid 3/4 inch hickory run 24 to 36 inches with some longer 48 to 60 inch boards mixed in. Compare to white oak at 36 to 60 inch average length.
Wide-plank hickory (5 inch and 6.5 inch widths) is available but commands an extra premium of $2 to $3 per square foot. True 8 inch and 10 inch wide-plank hickory exists from specialty mills like Carlisle and Pioneer Millworks, with prices crossing $14 per square foot material-only.
Acclimation Time and Subfloor Prep
Hickory requires 7 to 14 days of acclimation in the install room at target RH (35 to 55 percent) before nailing. Most installers want a moisture content reading on the boards within 2 percent of the subfloor reading before they will install. Skipping the acclimation produces gapping and cupping within the first season.
Subfloor flatness tolerance is 3/16 inch over 10 feet for nail-down install. Older plywood subfloors with deflection or fasteners protruding telegraph through hickory more visibly than they do through softer species because the harder boards do not relax over time.
Where Hickory Genuinely Outperforms
Despite the disadvantages, hickory shines in high-traffic family homes with active humidity control, in mountain and ranch-style architecture where the rustic grain fits the design, and as engineered planks in homes that need stability with hickory’s signature look. The Janka 1820 hardness is real protection against dog claws, dropped tools, and dining chair drag. For owners willing to manage humidity, pay the premium, and accept the bold visual variation, the floor delivers a 25 to 50-year lifespan that softer species cannot match.
Better Alternatives to Consider

If you wanted the rustic look without the price, distressed white oak or wire-brushed red oak deliver similar visual energy at $2 to $4 per square foot lower cost. Engineered hickory with a 3mm sawn face splits the difference — the look, the hardness, the dimensional stability, with the cost premium intact but the refinishing limitations softened. Match the product to your home, not to the Janka number alone.
