First, Understand What You’re Sanding

Dried joint compound is soft, far softer than wood, and the paper face of the drywall around it is not. That asymmetry drives everything about drywall sanding: aggressive grits and heavy pressure cut through mud instantly and then scuff the paper, which raises fuzz that telegraphs through paint. So drywall work uses fine grits, 120 to 220, light pressure, and tools with large flat faces that bridge across joints instead of digging into them. The goal is never to remove a lot of material; a well-run finish coat needs only its trowel ridges knocked down and its edges feathered. If you find yourself sanding hard, the fix is another thin coat of mud, not a coarser disc.

Hand Sanders and Sponges: For Patches

For repairs up to a few square feet, hand tools win on control and cost. The essentials: a rubber or plastic hand sander that clamps half-sheets of drywall sandpaper ($8 to $15), giving a flat 3×9-inch face that keeps small patches planar, and sanding sponges in fine and extra-fine, whose flexible faces wrap slightly and whose angled versions get into corners. Dust Control: The Half of the Job Nobody Budgets

Whatever tool you choose, plan the dust. Gypsum and compound dust is fine enough to pass ordinary vacuum bags and cheap masks, and silica-containing compounds make it a genuine respiratory concern. The hierarchy: source capture (electric sander plus shop vac with a HEPA or drywall bag, or a $25 sanding attachment that connects a hand/pole sander to a vac through a water-trap bucket), then containment (plastic over doorways, returns sealed, a box fan exhausting out a window creating negative pressure), then protection, an N95 minimum on your face and safety glasses, because compound dust in eyes is miserable. Grits, Technique, and the Light Trick

Stock 120, 150, and 220. Use 120 only for knocking down serious ridges, 150 for general first-pass sanding, and 220 for the final pass. The small pad follows dips instead of bridging them, so joints end up smooth but wavy, the opposite of what drywall sanding is for; the pad loads with compound dust quickly, glazing the abrasive; and standard orbital dust collection, designed for wood chips, lets fine gypsum dust blow past the skirt. Dedicated drywall machines solve all three with big flat heads, open-mesh abrasives that resist loading, and shrouded full-perimeter extraction. If you do press an orbital into service, use mesh sanding discs rather than paper, keep the sander moving flat with no edge pressure, and accept that it is a patch tool, not a joint tool.

Sanding New Taping vs. Sanding Old Paint

One distinction saves beginners grief: fresh joint compound sands easily, but previously painted surfaces do not behave the same way. Skim coats over paint, common when smoothing textured walls, leave you sanding thin compound over a harder painted substrate, and aggressive passes burn through to glossy paint that new mud will not disguise; use 220, light pressure, and more skim coats rather than more sanding. Old oil-painted plaster and any pre-1980 painted surface adds a real caution: lead. Sanding pre-1978 paint without containment is the most efficient lead-dust generator in a house, so test first with a $15 swab kit, and if it is positive, stop and use lead-safe practices or a certified contractor. Compound itself, old or new, is not the lead risk; the paint layers are.
