Drywall Sizes Chart: Standard Dimensions, Thicknesses, and Uses

Walk into Home Depot’s drywall aisle and you’ll see at least eight different panels in three thicknesses. Pick the wrong one and you’ll either pay for material you didn’t need or end up with sagging ceilings six months after install. This drywall sizes chart covers every standard panel sold in the US, what each thickness is meant for, weights you can actually lift, and the special-purpose panels (mold-resistant, fire-rated, abuse-resistant) that solve specific problems. I’ve hung over a quarter-million square feet of drywall and made every wrong-thickness mistake at least once.

Standard Sheet Dimensions

Three sheet sizes cover 95 percent of residential and light commercial work:

  • 4 ft x 8 ft — 32 square feet per sheet, fits in most pickup beds and minivans
  • 4 ft x 10 ft — 40 square feet per sheet, used in homes with 9 or 10-foot ceilings
  • 4 ft x 12 ft — 48 square feet per sheet, the pro choice for ceilings and long walls

Less common but available by special order: 4×9, 4×14, and 4×16 sheets used in high-end residential and commercial work. The 16-foot sheets weigh 100+ pounds and require at least two strong people to handle without breaking.

Thickness Options and Where to Use Them

Drywall comes in five common thicknesses. Each has a job:

  • 1/4 inch — Skim-coat repair, curved walls (it bends to a 5-foot radius), doubled-up over old plaster
  • 3/8 inch — Remodel work over existing 3/8 plaster, occasional repair patches
  • 1/2 inch — Standard residential wall panel, used in 90 percent of homes built after 1970
  • 5/8 inch — Standard for ceilings, fire-rated assemblies, and commercial applications
  • 3/4 inch — Specialty soundproofing and high-impact panels

For ceilings, always use 5/8 inch even on residential jobs. Half-inch drywall on ceilings sags between joists over 5 to 10 years, especially with insulation pressing from above. The extra 1/8 inch of gypsum costs maybe $40 more across a 1,500 square-foot house and prevents the wavy ceiling line you see in many tract homes.

Weight Per Sheet

Drywall is heavier than people expect. Plan your delivery and hauling accordingly:

  • 1/2 inch x 4 x 8 — about 52 pounds
  • 1/2 inch x 4 x 12 — about 78 pounds
  • 5/8 inch x 4 x 8 — about 70 pounds
  • 5/8 inch x 4 x 12 — about 105 pounds
  • 5/8 inch fire-rated Type X x 4 x 12 — about 110 pounds

USG’s UltraLight panels weigh 25 to 30 percent less. A 1/2 inch x 4×12 UltraLight runs about 56 pounds and costs $2 to $4 more per sheet. For solo installers or anyone hanging ceilings without a lift, that price premium is worth every penny.

Specialty Panels Worth Knowing

Beyond standard white-paper gypsum, manufacturers make four specialty panels that homeowners encounter most often:

  1. Moisture/mold-resistant (green or purple board) — USG Sheetrock Mold Tough at about $18 per 4×8 sheet, used in bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements. Not for direct shower walls — use cement board there
  2. Fire-rated Type X — required by code for garage walls bordering living space and between attached structures. About $14 per 4×8 sheet
  3. Abuse-resistant — USG Sheetrock Mold Tough AR or National Gypsum Hi-Impact, used in mudrooms, hallways with kids, garages
  4. Soundproofing — QuietRock or USG Sheetrock UltraLight Sound at $50 to $70 per 4×8 sheet, used in shared walls between bedrooms and bathrooms

For a single bathroom remodel, mold-resistant board on all walls (except inside the shower) costs maybe $40 more than standard and prevents the black-mold-behind-the-vanity problem that I see in 1 of every 4 older homes.

Choosing Sheet Length for Your Project

Longer sheets mean fewer joints, less tape, and faster work. For an 8-foot ceiling room, hanging 12-foot sheets horizontally on the walls puts the seam at 4 feet — easy to tape and chair-rail height where it’s hidden visually. Hanging 8-foot sheets vertically creates a seam every 4 feet, doubling your taping work.

The downside: 12-foot sheets don’t fit in standard pickup trucks. Either rent a flatbed for the delivery or have the store deliver — most charge $50 to $90 within a 25-mile radius, which is worth it for a job over 30 sheets.

How Many Sheets You’ll Need

For a quick estimate, calculate total wall and ceiling square footage, divide by sheet size (32 for 4×8, 48 for 4×12), and add 10 to 15 percent for cuts and waste. A 200 square-foot bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling and 56 linear feet of wall surface (less windows and doors) needs about 14 sheets of 4×8 1/2-inch for walls and 7 sheets of 4×8 5/8-inch for the ceiling.

Online estimators at usg.com and certainteed.com give more precise counts, but the manual math gives you a sanity check on contractor estimates that sometimes pad material counts by 30 to 40 percent.

Fasteners, Tape, and Compound

The drywall sizes chart is half the equation. The other half is fastener choice:

  • Screws — 1-1/4 inch coarse thread for 1/2 inch panels on wood framing, 1-5/8 inch for 5/8 inch. Use Grabber or Spax brand, not bargain bins
  • Nails — only on patches; never use for full sheets, they pop within 18 months
  • Tape — paper tape for flat joints, FibaTape mesh for repairs and inside corners
  • Compound — USG Plus 3 all-purpose for first coat, USG Sheetrock Brand Topping for finish coats

Use a DeWalt or Milwaukee drywall screw gun ($120 to $170) instead of a regular drill. The depth-stop nose seats screws to the correct dimple depth every time and saves about 30 percent of total install time on any job over 20 sheets.

Local Code Considerations

Building codes mandate fire-rated drywall in specific assemblies: garage walls and ceilings, walls between residential units in multifamily buildings, and shafts around stairs. Check your local amendments to the IRC, which sometimes require 5/8-inch Type X where the base code allows 1/2-inch.

For any structural changes, get a permit. Inspectors check drywall thickness during framing inspections and will flag undersized panels. Switching from 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch after the fact means tearing out work you already paid to install.
