Scrub the area with a degreasing cleaner, rinse, and let it dry completely; on a tub, that means waiting several hours or drying with a hair dryer to drive moisture out of the pores.

Temperature counts too. Most adhesive strips bond best when the surface is between 50°F and 90°F. Step-by-Step Application

Dry-fit first. Lay each strip in position without removing the backing, mark the ends with a pencil, and cut strips to length with sharp scissors so they stop about one to two inches short of each edge; running them fully to the edge invites peeling from the sides. On stairs, place the strip about one to two inches back from the nosing, where the ball of the foot actually lands.

Peel the backing and press the strip down from one end to the other, smoothing as you go to avoid air bubbles. Once placed, apply firm pressure over the entire strip with a roller or the heel of your hand, working from the center outward. That pressure activates the pressure-sensitive adhesive and is the step most people rush. Keep the area dry for at least 24 hours so the bond can fully cure before any water hits it.

Maintenance and Replacement

Choose strips when you want targeted, low-profile, easy-to-replace traction on specific footfall zones. Choose a mat for full tub coverage you can remove, a coating for whole-surface treatment where you do not want visible hardware, and full treads for high-traffic stairs that see heavy use. Often the best result combines methods, such as a coating on the shower pan plus strips on the tub’s step-over edge.

Whatever the setting, the priority is friction where it is needed most, applied to a properly prepped surface so it stays put.
