Hardwood Floor Planks: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Lay a 2-1/4 inch oak strip floor next to a 7-1/2 inch white oak plank and a homeowner can spot the difference from across the room. The wider planks read modern, expansive, and architectural, while the narrow strips read traditional, busy, and dated. Hardwood floor planks have steadily widened over the past 20 years, with 5 to 7 inch boards now dominating premium residential construction. Width, however, is just one of a half-dozen specifications that separate a 12-year floor from a 50-year floor.

This guide covers the major decisions: solid vs engineered, plank width, species, grade, finish, and what each of those choices actually costs in 2026.

Solid vs Engineered Construction

Every plank starts as one of two structural types, and the decision drives where the floor can go:

  • Solid hardwood: a single piece of wood 3/4 inch thick, milled with tongue-and-groove edges. Refinishable 4 to 6 times. Restricted to above-grade installations on wood subfloors.
  • Engineered hardwood: a thin top wear layer (1mm to 6mm) bonded to a multi-ply or HDF core. Refinishable 0 to 3 times depending on wear-layer thickness. Installs over slab, plywood, or even radiant heat.

For first-floor installations over a slab or in basements, engineered is the only safe choice. For upstairs bedrooms over a wood subfloor, solid hardwood lasts longer. Both can look identical when finished, but the long-term flexibility differs.

Plank Width: The Single Biggest Visual Decision

Plank width affects how a room reads more than any other choice:

  • 2-1/4 to 3-1/4 inch strip: traditional, common in 1940s-1990s homes. Lots of seams, busy visual.
  • 4 to 5 inch plank: the modern standard. Clean look, fewer seams, broadly compatible with all decor.
  • 6 to 7-1/2 inch plank: contemporary premium. Less busy, makes spaces feel larger.
  • 8 to 12 inch wide plank: dramatic, architectural, requires very flat substrate (3/16 inch over 10 feet).

Wider planks mean more seasonal movement. A 7-1/2 inch solid oak plank in a Minnesota home can gap 1/8 inch in winter and bow that much again in summer humidity. Engineered construction reduces movement by 70% and is the right call for plank widths above 5 inches in cold or humid climates.

Wood Species and Their Strengths

Each species has a Janka hardness rating (resistance to denting) and a distinct appearance:

  • White oak: Janka 1,360. Tight grain, accepts virtually any stain, the modern default.
  • Red oak: Janka 1,290. Pinker undertone, busier grain, less expensive than white oak.
  • Hickory: Janka 1,820. Dramatic color variation, excellent dent resistance, slightly more difficult to sand.
  • Maple: Janka 1,450. Light, smooth grain, hard but accepts stain unevenly.
  • Walnut: Janka 1,010. Rich brown, soft for hardwood (dents easily), expensive.
  • Hickory’s tropical equivalent — Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba): Janka 2,820. Nearly indestructible, rich red color that darkens significantly with UV.
  • Acacia: Janka 1,750. Exotic look, similar pricing to oak, popular for engineered.

For households with kids, pets, and active wear, hickory and white oak deliver the best long-term performance. Walnut belongs in primary suites and formal areas where dents are less frequent.

Grade: What the Industry Numbers Mean

NWFA grades describe the visual character of the wood. Higher grade does not mean better quality — just more uniform appearance:

  • Clear/Select: minimal knots, color variation, and sapwood. Most expensive.
  • #1 Common: moderate knots and color variation. Mid-tier price.
  • #2 Common (Cabin Grade): heavy character, large knots, color variation. Most affordable.
  • Character Grade: deliberately rustic, heavy graining and knots. Specialty pricing.

For a 1920s craftsman home, character grade reads authentic. For a modern minimalist build, select grade keeps the floor visually quiet and lets architecture speak.

Site-Finished vs Prefinished

Hardwood floor planks come either prefinished from the factory or unfinished for site finishing:

  • Prefinished: aluminum oxide UV-cured finish, 7 to 9 coats, micro-bevel edges, ready to walk on at install. 25-year residential warranties common.
  • Site-finished: raw wood installed and sanded smooth, then 3 to 4 coats of polyurethane applied on site. Seamless flat surface with no bevels.

Prefinished installs in 1 to 2 days for an average home and is ready immediately. Site-finished takes 5 to 7 days but produces a more seamless look. For a busy household, prefinished is usually the right tradeoff.

Realistic Cost in 2026

Material and install pricing for an average residential project:

  • Builder-grade engineered oak (3mm wear layer): $3.99 to $5.99 per sq ft material
  • Mid-grade engineered oak (4mm sawn face): $7.99 to $11.99 per sq ft material
  • Premium engineered oak (6mm sawn face, wide plank): $12 to $20 per sq ft material
  • Solid red oak strip (#1 Common): $4.99 to $7.99 per sq ft material
  • Solid white oak plank (Select grade, 5 inch): $8 to $14 per sq ft material
  • Walnut, hickory, and exotic species: $10 to $25 per sq ft material
  • Professional install (nail-down): $4 to $7 per sq ft
  • Glue-down or floating engineered: $3 to $6 per sq ft
  • Sanding and finishing site-installed: $4 to $7 per sq ft

For a 1,200 sq ft main floor in mid-grade engineered oak, expect $13,000 to $22,000 installed. The same job in premium 7-inch white oak runs $20,000 to $32,000.

Subfloor and Acclimation

Hardwood is unforgiving of moisture mismatches. Two prep steps are non-negotiable:

  1. Subfloor flatness: 3/16 inch over 10 feet for nail-down, 1/8 inch over 10 feet for glue-down or floating.
  2. Acclimation: let the boxed wood sit in the install location for 5 to 14 days, opened and stickered, until the wood and the room match within 2% moisture content.

Skip acclimation and you will see gaps in winter or buckling in summer within 18 months. Use a pin-style moisture meter (Lignomat Mini-Ligno or similar, $80) to verify before installing.

Finish Sheen and Long-Term Care

The topcoat sheen affects how the floor looks and ages:

  • Matte (5% to 10% gloss): hides scratches and dust. Modern preferred sheen.
  • Satin (25% to 35%): the traditional default, slightly reflective.
  • Semi-gloss (45% to 55%): dated for residential, better for commercial.
  • Gloss (70%+): too reflective for most homes, every speck of dust shows.

For ongoing maintenance, use Bona Hardwood Cleaner or a microfiber pad with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Avoid steam mops, which drive moisture into seams and degrade the finish.

Pick the right specs at the spec sheet stage and a hardwood floor will outlast every other element in the home except the foundation. Get any one variable wrong — wrong width for the climate, wrong grade for the decor, wrong subfloor prep — and you will be replacing the floor twice as fast as expected.
