How to Build an Interior Wall: A DIY Weekend Project

Splitting a large room into two with a new partition wall is one of the few real DIY projects that adds appraised square footage of usable space without any structural engineering. Learning how to build an interior wall takes one weekend, about $180 in lumber and fasteners, and basic tools most homeowners already own. The catch is that small framing mistakes — out-of-plumb studs, missed nailers, undersized headers over doors — make drywall a nightmare and create a wall that never feels right. Here is the framing sequence I teach apprentices, with the small details that separate clean DIY walls from amateur ones.

Plan the Wall Location First

Mark the new wall on the floor using a chalk line. Confirm two things before cutting any lumber:

  • The wall lands where you can fasten the top plate to either ceiling joists or perpendicular blocking
  • The wall does not block any HVAC registers, electrical panels, or window egress paths

If joists run perpendicular to your planned wall, you fasten directly into them every 16 inches. If joists run parallel, your wall must either fall directly under a joist or you add 2×4 blocking between joists before starting.

Materials List for a 10-Foot Wall

This list assumes an 8-foot ceiling and a 10-foot long wall with one standard 32-inch door:

  • Two 2x4x10 boards (top and bottom plates)
  • Eight 2x4x92.625-inch precut studs (16-inch on center spacing)
  • Two 2x4x10 boards for door header and cripples
  • One 2×4 for door king studs and jack studs
  • 3-inch framing nails or 3-inch deck screws
  • 16d nails (or screws) for plate fastening
  • One 32-inch pre-hung interior door
  • Two 4-by-8 sheets of 1/2-inch drywall per side
  • Drywall screws, joint compound, mesh or paper tape

Total lumber cost: $90 to $135. Drywall and finishing materials: $80 to $130. Door (basic six-panel pre-hung): $130 to $250.

Mark the Plates Together

Cut the top and bottom plates to the same length. Lay them side-by-side on edge and mark stud locations across both plates at once. Mark the first stud 1.5 inches from one end, then every 16 inches on center for the rest. Mark with an “X” on the side of the line where the stud sits.

For doors, mark king stud, jack stud, and the rough opening center. A 32-inch door needs a 34-inch rough opening (door + jamb + shimming gap).

Locate Floor and Ceiling Fasteners

Snap a chalk line on the floor where the bottom plate goes. Use a plumb bob or 8-foot level to transfer the line straight up to the ceiling — this is where the top plate fastens.

Fasten the bottom plate first. For concrete slabs, use Tapcon screws every 24 inches. For wood subfloors, 16d nails or 3-inch screws every 16 inches into floor joists or subfloor work fine. Skip the area where the door opening will be — you cut that section out later anyway.

Install the Top Plate

Lift the marked top plate to the ceiling line. If joists run perpendicular, fasten with 3-inch screws into every joist. If joists run parallel, your top plate fastens into pre-installed blocking between joists.

Use a 6-foot level to check the top plate is directly over the bottom plate. Adjust as needed before driving more than two fasteners — once committed, repositioning is painful.

Cut and Install Studs

Measure the actual distance between top and bottom plates at three points along the wall. Cut studs to fit (typically 92.625 inches with 1/16 inch tolerance). Toe-nail each stud in place using 8d nails at 45 degrees through the stud into the plate — two nails per side, four nails total per stud-to-plate connection.

Alternative: screws from underneath through the plate into the stud end work even better and are easier with a cordless impact driver. Pre-drill to avoid splitting the plate.

Frame the Door Opening

The rough opening for a 32-inch pre-hung door is 34 inches wide by 82.5 inches tall. Build it this way:

  1. Install full-height king studs on each side of the rough opening (34 inches apart, measuring inside-to-inside)
  2. Cut and install jack studs (also called trimmers) against the king studs. Jack stud height equals door rough opening height (82.5 inches)
  3. Build a header from doubled 2x4s with a 1/2-inch plywood spacer between them, totaling 3.5 inches thick
  4. Set the header on top of the jack studs, between the king studs
  5. Install cripple studs above the header at 16-inch centers, matching the regular stud layout
  6. After the wall is up, cut out the bottom plate section inside the rough opening

For interior non-load-bearing walls, a doubled 2×4 header works for any standard door. Save the engineered headers for exterior or load-bearing locations.

Electrical and Drywall Backing

If outlets or switches will be in the wall, run cable now before any drywall goes up. Standard outlet height is 12 inches from finished floor to the bottom of the box; switches go 48 inches from floor to bottom of box. Drill 3/4-inch holes through stud centers for cable runs — staying centered protects the cable from drywall screws.

At corners where the new wall meets an existing wall, install drywall backing — a 2×6 nailed flat against the existing wall framing — to give the drywall a fastening surface on both sides of the corner.

Hanging Drywall

Run 1/2-inch drywall horizontally with 4-foot sheets, top row first. Stagger seams so vertical joints in the bottom row do not align with the top row. Fasten with drywall screws every 12 inches in the field and every 8 inches at edges, sinking each screw slightly below the paper surface without breaking through.

Tape and mud all seams with three coats: tape coat, fill coat, and skim coat. Sand between the second and third coats. The whole drywall finishing process takes three days because each coat needs to dry overnight.

Door Install and Trim

Set the pre-hung door in the rough opening, shim plumb and square at the hinge side first, then nail through the jamb into the king stud with 8d finish nails. Shim and nail the latch side, confirming the door swings freely and the gaps around all sides are even.

Install casing on both sides with 4-inch reveal at the inside corners and 2-inch finish nails into both jamb and rough framing.

Code Items Inspectors Look For

  • Studs at 16-inch on center for walls with electrical boxes
  • Fire blocking at the top of stud bays in walls connecting to attic space
  • Proper header sizing (doubled 2×4 minimum for non-load-bearing)
  • GFCI protection on any new circuits added in kitchens or bathrooms
  • Nail plates over any cable run within 1.25 inches of a stud edge

Permits are required in most jurisdictions for new walls, especially if you add electrical work. Inspection fees run $80 to $250. Skipping the permit risks issues at sale time — appraisers often check work history against permit records.

Realistic Timeline

Day one: frame the wall, install the door, run any electrical. Day two: hang drywall and tape coat the seams. Day three: second coat. Day four: third coat. Day five: sand, prime, and paint. The wall itself is up in eight hours of weekend work; finishing fills the week. Pay attention to plumb and square at the framing stage and every step after gets easier.
