How to Drill Concrete: A Step-by-Step Guide That Actually Works

The fastest way to ruin a $40 masonry bit is to load it into a standard cordless drill and lean on the trigger. Concrete is roughly 3,000 to 4,000 PSI compressive strength in residential slabs and far higher in commercial pours, which means brute force burns bits and dulls flutes within minutes. Choose the Right Bit

Carbide-tipped masonry bits are the minimum standard. Premium options like Bosch Bulldog Xtreme or Milwaukee MX4 use a four-cutter head and reinforced carbide that drills two to three times more holes before dulling. A standard 3/8 inch x 6 inch SDS-Plus bit costs $9. A four-cutter version runs $18 but drills five times the holes.

Match the bit diameter exactly to the anchor manufacturer’s spec. Mark, Score, and Set the Depth

The Drilling Technique
