Tile has zero tolerance for an uneven subfloor. Unlike carpet or vinyl that conform to minor dips and bumps, tile is rigid. An unlevel floor causes lippage (uneven tile edges), cracked tiles, hollow spots, and failed grout joints. Leveling the floor before tiling is not optional — it is the single most important step in the entire tile installation process.

Acceptable Tolerances for Tile Installation

The tile industry standard (ANSI A108.02) requires:

  • Tiles 15 inches or smaller: Floor must be flat within 1/4 inch over 10 feet
  • Tiles larger than 15 inches (including 12×24, 24×24, large format): Floor must be flat within 1/8 inch over 10 feet
  • No abrupt variations excestrong than 1/32 inch: Sharp bumps and ridges are not acceptable even if the overall 10-foot measurement passes

Note the standard says “flat,” not “level.” A floor can slope consistently (like a basement floor graded toward a drain) and still be acceptable for tile as long as it does not have humps, dips, or ridges within those tolerances.

How to Check Your Floor

Tools

  • 10-foot straightedge (or an 8-foot level, which is the most commonly available)
  • Tape measure or ruler
  • Chalk or marker

Checking Process

  1. Lay the straightedge flat on the floor and move it across the entire surface in multiple directions (lengthwise, widthwise, and diagonally).
  2. Where the straightedge rocks or lifts, measure the gap between the bottom of the straightedge and the floor with a ruler.
  3. Mark high spots with one color and low spots with another.
  4. Repeat across the entire area being tiled. Check every section — uneven floors are rarely uniform in their unevenness.

Most floors fail in isolated areas, not across the entire surface. This determines whether you need spot correction or full-floor leveling.

Leveling Methods

Method 1: Self-Leveling Compound (SLC)

Self-leveling compound is a cement-based mixture that is poured onto the floor as a thick liquid and finds its own level as gravity pulls it flat. It is the most effective method for correcting widespread unevenness on concrete and cementitious substrates.

When to Use SLC

  • Concrete subfloors with broad dips and undulations
  • Floors that are out of tolerance across large areas
  • Over existing tile, vinyl, or other hard surfaces (with proper primer)
  • When you need precise flatness for large-format tile

Step-by-Step SLC Application

  1. Prepare the substrate: The floor must be clean, free of dust, grease, paint, sealers, and loose material. Sweep, vacuum, and scrape. Any contaminant prevents bonding.
  2. Seal cracks and gaps: Fill cracks over 1/8 inch with concrete crack filler. Dam doorways, drains, and any openings with foam backer rod or duct tape to prevent SLC from flowing where you do not want it.
  3. Apply primer: Most SLC products require a specific primer (usually sold by the same manufacturer). Roll or brush primer onto the entire surface and let it dry per product instructions, typically 1 to 3 hours. Skipping primer is the number one cause of SLC failure.
  4. Mix the SLC: Use a drill with a mixing paddle (a standard drill may not have enough torque — a 1/2-inch drill is recommended). Mix to the consistency specified on the bag (usually like a thick milkshake). Mix time is typically 2 to 3 minutes. Do not under-mix or over-mix.
  5. Pour immediately: Working time is limited — usually 15 to 20 minutes from mixing. Pour the SLC onto the floor starting at the far corner and working toward the exit.
  6. Spread with a gauge rake: While SLC is self-leveling, it helps to spread it to approximate thickness with a gauge rake (a notched rake that sets the depth). For areas thicker than 1/4 inch, this is important for even distribution.
  7. Pop bubbles with a spike roller: Roll a spike roller (spiked nap roller) over the wet SLC to release trapped air. This step takes 2 to 3 minutes and prevents pinholes in the surface.
  8. Let it cure: Do not walk on SLC until it has hardened (typically 2 to 4 hours). Wait the full recommended time before tiling (16 to 24 hours for most products).
  9. Check flatness again: After curing, verify with your straightedge. SLC occasionally settles slightly or misses a low spot. Minor corrections can be addressed with a skim coat of the same product.

Coverage and Thickness

  • A 50-lb bag typically covers about 25 square feet at 1/8-inch thickness
  • Most products can be poured from featheredge (paper thin) up to 1 inch in a single pour
  • For pours thicker than 1 inch, apply in multiple lifts, allowing each to set before pouring the next
  • A 200-square-foot room at 1/4-inch average thickness needs approximately 8 bags (400 lbs of material)

Method 2: Grinding High Spots

When the floor is mostly flat but has isolated high spots (thinset ridges from old tile, concrete humps, raised seams), grinding is faster and cheaper than pouring SLC.

  • Tool: Concrete grinder with diamond cup wheel. Available at rental centers for $50 to $100 per day.
  • Angle grinder alternative: For small areas, a standard angle grinder with a 4-inch diamond cup wheel works. Cost: $25 to $40 for the cup wheel.
  • Process: Mark the high spot. Grind it down, checking frequently with a straightedge. Vacuum the dust (concrete grinding creates enormous amounts of dust — a dust shroud attachment and shop vac are essential).
  • Limitation: Grinding only removes material. It cannot fill low spots.

Method 3: Thinset Skim Coat

For minor low spots (under 1/4 inch) on concrete, a skim coat of modified thinset mortar can be troweled flat and tiled over once cured. This is the simplest correction for small areas.

  1. Dampen the low spot.
  2. Mix modified thinset to a slightly wetter consistency than normal (like cake batter).
  3. Trowel the thinset into the low spot using the flat side of a trowel, feathering the edges to meet the surrounding floor.
  4. Let cure 24 hours before tiling over it.

This method is limited to fills under 1/4 inch. For deeper corrections, use SLC.

Method 4: Plywood Overlay for Wood Subfloors

On wood-framed floors, adding a layer of plywood can correct unevenness while also increasing rigidity for tile. This is often the best approach when the existing subfloor is rough, uneven, or not thick enough for tile.

When to Use Plywood Overlay

  • Wood subfloor with dips, humps, or uneven seams
  • Existing subfloor is too thin (less than 3/4 inch over 16-inch on-center joists) and needs additional thickness for tile
  • Old subfloor with multiple layers of old flooring that are impractical to remove

Process

  1. Fix any structural issues first — sister weak joists, refasten loose subfloor panels, replace damaged sections.
  2. Shim low spots from below (between joists and subfloor) where possible.
  3. Install 1/4-inch or 3/8-inch plywood over the existing subfloor using construction adhesive and screws spaced every 8 inches.
  4. Offset the seams of the new plywood from the existing subfloor seams by at least 6 inches.
  5. Check flatness with a straightedge after installation. Sand or fill remaining imperfections.
  6. Install cement board (1/4-inch Hardiebacker or Durock) or uncoupling membrane (Schluter DITRA) over the plywood before tiling.

Height Considerations

Plywood overlay adds height. A typical buildup for tile on a wood floor is:

  • Existing subfloor: 3/4 inch
  • Plywood overlay: 1/4 to 3/8 inch
  • Cement board: 1/4 to 1/2 inch
  • Thinset + tile: 3/8 to 5/8 inch
  • Total buildup: 1-5/8 to 2-1/4 inches above the joist tops

This total height matters at transitions to other rooms. You may need reducer strips or threshold ramps to handle the height difference.

Tools for Floor Leveling

  • Straightedge (8 to 10 feet): Essential for checking flatness before and after. A factory-edge aluminum level works, but a dedicated straightedge is more accurate. Cost: $30 to $60.
  • Mixing drill with paddle: A 1/2-inch corded drill with a mixing paddle is the minimum for SLC. A dedicated mixing drill is better for large jobs. Paddle: $10 to $20. Drill rental: $30 to $50/day.

Common Leveling Mistakes

  • Tiling over an uneven floor and using extra thinset to compensate: This is the most common shortcut, and it fails. Thick thinset beds shrink and crack. The maximum thinset thickness is typically 3/16 to 1/4 inch for standard thinset. Large-and-heavy tile mortar extends to 1/2 inch. Beyond that, you must level the floor first.
  • Skipping primer before SLC: SLC without primer debonds from the substrate, sometimes months after installation. The tiles and grout above it crack and pop loose.
  • Mixing SLC too thick: If the mix is too thick, it will not self-level and leaves trowel marks and ridges. Follow the water ratio exactly.
  • Not damming openings: SLC is a liquid that flows freely. It will pour down vents, through doorways, and into cracks if you do not block them.
  • Working too slowly: SLC begins to set within 15 to 20 minutes. If you are doing a large area, you need a helper — one person mixes while the other pours and rakes.
  • Ignoring subfloor deflection: A floor can be perfectly flat and still be too bouncy for tile. Leveling compounds do not add rigidity. If the subfloor flexes underfoot, address the structural support before leveling.
