Installing a Light Fixture: Complete Guide for Homeowners

Most homeowners can replace a basic ceiling fixture in under 45 minutes with a $20 toolkit and a healthy respect for the breaker panel. The hard part of installing a light fixture is not the wiring — it is confirming the box can hold the new weight, that the wires are dead before you touch them, and that your local code allows the swap without an electrician on site. Get those three things right and the rest is just turning screwdrivers.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Step 5: Connect the Wires

  1. Strip 5/8 inch of insulation from each fixture wire if not pre-stripped
  2. Twist the bare ground wires together with the green wire from the fixture; cap with a green wire nut
  3. Match neutral to neutral — white to white — twist clockwise and cap
  4. Match hot to hot — black to black — twist clockwise and cap
  5. Wrap each wire nut with electrical tape for added security
  6. Tuck wires neatly into the box, leaving slack for the fixture to pull down later

If the new fixture has a smooth and ribbed wire instead of black and white, the ribbed wire is the neutral. Connect ribbed to white in the box.

Step 6: Mount the Fixture and Test

Lift the fixture into place and align with the bracket’s keyholes or threaded studs. Tighten the canopy nuts evenly — finger-tight first, then a quarter turn with a screwdriver. Install bulbs (LED for new construction; 9W LED equals a 60W incandescent), then restore power at the breaker.

Flip the wall switch. The fixture should light immediately. If it flickers, recheck wire nut tightness. If a breaker trips, you have a hot-to-ground or hot-to-neutral short — kill the breaker and recheck connections.

Most jurisdictions allow homeowner fixture swaps without a permit when the wiring inside the box is not modified. Adding a new fixture, running new cable, or installing on a circuit that needs a junction box added typically triggers a permit and inspection.
