Premium acoustic mats for condos can reach $1.00 to $2.00 per sq ft. For a 400-square-foot room, that’s roughly $120 to $600 in material, plus an hour or two of labor since it rolls or floats out quickly before the planks go down.
Installation Tips That Prevent Failures
Even the right underlayment fails if you install it wrong, so a few details matter. Roll out the sheets perpendicular to the direction your planks will run, and butt the seams together without overlapping; tape them with the manufacturer’s seam tape so they can’t shift while you float the planks on top. Trim it flush at the walls and leave the same expansion gap the flooring requires, usually 1/4 to 3/8 inch around the perimeter. If your underlayment includes a moisture-barrier film, lap that film up the wall a couple of inches behind the baseboard so vapor can’t sneak in at the edges.
Before any of this, check the subfloor for flatness. Vinyl telegraphs every ridge and dip, and underlayment only masks deviations up to about 1/8 inch over 6 feet. Grind down high spots and fill low ones with a cementitious leveler first. On concrete, run a calcium-chloride or relative-humidity moisture test; if the slab reads above the flooring maker’s limit, no underlayment will save the install, and you’ll need to address the moisture source before laying a single plank.
