A fuzzy patch behind the shampoo bottles. A black speck creeping across the caulk line. An off smell in the basement that gets worse in August. Mold shows up everywhere moisture does, and the first tool most homeowners reach for is a mold killing spray. The shelf options look similar, but the active ingredients vary wildly and so does the right choice for each surface. Bleach on drywall destroys the paper. Hydrogen peroxide on glazed tile works beautifully. Picking the wrong product wastes money and, worse, leaves live spores behind to bloom again in a week.
Understand What You Are Actually Killing
Household mold is almost always one of four families: Cladosporium (green or black, lives on wood and fabric), Aspergillus (green-yellow, thrives in HVAC and damp walls), Penicillium (blue-green, loves wet carpet and food), and Stachybotrys chartarum (the infamous black mold, needs sustained water damage). You treat visible colonies and the tiny network of hyphae that extends into porous surfaces beneath them.
A surface spray kills what it contacts. It does not kill what is buried in drywall paper or under grout sealer. For visible surface mold under about 10 sq ft total, a good spray handles it. Anything larger, or anything that keeps returning, means there is an unresolved water source or hidden colony behind the surface.
Spray Categories and Active Ingredients

Bleach Versus Hydrogen Peroxide

Technique matters as much as product choice. Work in a ventilated space, wear nitrile gloves, and put on an N95 or P100 respirator if the area is larger than 3 sq ft.
- Contain the area with painter’s tape and plastic sheeting if possible
- Mist the moldy surface rather than blasting it — aggressive spraying aerosolizes spores
- Let the product dwell the full time on the label, usually 3 to 15 minutes
- Scrub with a stiff nylon brush for tile and grout, a soft brush for wood
- Wipe with a dampened microfiber cloth, never a dry one, so spores stay trapped in the fibers

What Not to Do
