The honest counterpoints: mud remains unlimited in footprint and cheap in raw materials, and an oddball 49×41 alcove with a corner post may still be easiest to hand-build. Installing a Tileable Pre-Sloped Pan, Step by Step

Choosing Between the Major Systems

Brand choice matters less than execution, but the systems do have personalities. Wedi builds the waterproofing into the board itself, which cuts a full step from the process and suits installers who value speed, at a 15 to 25 percent price premium and thinner retail distribution. Tile Redi’s one-piece pans arrive with the drain molded in and need no membrane work at all — the fastest route to tile — but the pan cannot be trimmed much, so your alcove must genuinely match the SKU, and the integrated drain position is fixed. Laticrete’s Hydro Ban pan splits the difference with a coated foam pan and liquid or sheet accessory waterproofing. For a first-time builder in a standard alcove, the deepest documentation wins: the system you can watch installed twenty times before you touch mortar is the system you will install correctly.
