Two Kinds of Retrofit
- Can retrofit (trim insert): You already have recessed housings (“cans”) in the ceiling, probably with old incandescent flood bulbs. - Canless (housing-free) retrofit: No existing can. You cut a round hole in the drywall, connect the wiring to the fixture’s junction box, and spring-clip the thin LED disc directly into the hole. No bulky housing needed, so it fits in shallow ceilings and tight joist bays.

Safety First

Dimming and Color Temperature

- Set the color temperature switch on each unit before you clip it in — 2700K–3000K for living areas and bedrooms, 3500K–4000K for kitchens and baths, 5000K for garages and workspaces.

When to Call an Electrician
Swapping retrofit modules into existing cans is firmly DIY. Adding new canless lights where there was no fixture means running new cable, tying into a circuit, and possibly a new switch — that is where many homeowners bring in an electrician, and some jurisdictions require a permit for new circuits. If you are extending an existing circuit, make sure you are not overloading it with too many fixtures.
Checking Ceiling Clearance and Ratings
Before you cut a hole, confirm two things about the space above the ceiling. First, depth: canless LED discs are shallow, often under an inch plus the junction box, so they fit shallow ceilings that could never hold a real can — but you still need the junction box to clear whatever is up there. Second, ratings: if insulation will touch the fixture, it must be IC-rated (insulation contact), or the heat becomes a fire risk; most modern LED canless units are IC and airtight, but verify on the box. For a ceiling directly below an unconditioned attic, an airtight rating stops warm interior air from leaking up and causing condensation. When the ceiling separates you from an upstairs living space or a fire-rated assembly, check whether a fire-rated fixture or a cover is required by your local code.
Wiring Into an Existing Circuit
Adding canless lights usually means tapping an existing circuit, and you have to respect its capacity. Total up the wattage already on the circuit and the new LED fixtures — because LEDs draw so little (a 6-inch downlight is 9 to 15 watts), you can often add several to an existing lighting circuit without trouble, but do the math against the breaker rating rather than assuming. Run the feed from a switch or an existing fixture box, and connect the fixtures in a daisy chain using the push connectors in each junction box: line to line, neutral to neutral, ground to ground, from one light to the next. Keep all connections inside approved boxes — the fixture’s own junction box counts — never buried loose in the ceiling. If the new lights need their own switch, plan that leg before you close up.
Trim Styles and Beam Options
Retrofit fixtures are not one-size-of-light. The trim — the visible ring — comes in baffle (ridged, reduces glare), smooth reflector (brighter, more punch), and adjustable eyeball or gimbal versions that let you aim the beam at art or a wall. Match the trim color to the ceiling (white disappears, black recedes in a dark ceiling) or make it a deliberate accent. Consider the beam spread too: a wide beam gives even ambient wash, while a narrower beam concentrates light for task or accent work.
