SmartCore is Lowe’s exclusive luxury vinyl plank brand, manufactured by US Floors (the COREtec parent before Shaw bought them). That parentage matters — it’s the reason SmartCore LVP punches above its price point on dimensional stability and click-lock engineering. Whether it’s the right floor for your house depends on which of the four product tiers you’re looking at and what’s actually under your subfloor. Here’s the field guide after installing it in two rental properties and watching it survive three years of dogs and tenants.
The SmartCore Product Lineup
Lowe’s organizes SmartCore into four families that get confused at the displays:
- SmartCore Naturals. 5mm thick, 12 mil wear layer, attached IXPE pad. The entry tier. Pricing $1.99 to $2.99 per square foot.
- SmartCore Pro. 6.5mm thick, 12 mil wear layer, attached IXPE pad, wider planks. $2.49 to $3.49 per square foot.
- SmartCore Ultra. 8mm thick, 20 mil wear layer, attached pad. The performance tier. $3.49 to $4.99 per square foot.
- SmartCore Tile. Stone-look LVT with 12 mil wear layer. $2.49 to $3.99 per square foot.
All four use rigid-core SPC (stone-polymer composite) construction, which is the same material category as COREtec, Mohawk SolidTech, and Shaw Floorte Pro.
Where SmartCore Genuinely Performs
The rigid-core SPC platform is the same dimensional stability that makes COREtec excellent. Boards don’t expand and contract with humidity, won’t telegraph subfloor imperfections under 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and stay flat through temperature swings. I’ve watched a SmartCore Ultra install in an unconditioned Wisconsin lake cabin survive 18°F to 90°F seasonal range without a single peaked joint.
The click-lock engineering is licensed Uniclic, which is the gold standard in the industry. Joints snap together with minimal force and stay locked under foot traffic. Cheaper SPC products from random Amazon brands use proprietary locking systems that work poorly — SmartCore avoids that problem.
Where It Falls Short
The entry-level SmartCore Naturals at 5mm with 12 mil wear layer is genuinely thin. It works in low-traffic bedrooms and guest rooms but shows dents under heavy furniture in a year or two. If you’re shopping the bottom tier purely on price, skip to a different brand’s mid-tier rather than SmartCore’s bottom.
Color matching across boxes can drift. Order 10 percent overage and confirm all boxes share a lot number before any cuts. Lowe’s doesn’t always check this at the register, and replacement boxes after the fact may not match.
The visual quality on SmartCore Naturals reads slightly more “printed” than COREtec or Mohawk SolidTech Plus. Step up to SmartCore Ultra for embossed-in-register textures that line up with the printed wood grain. The difference is visible at normal walking distance.
SmartCore Ultra: The Pick to Buy
If you’re going to buy SmartCore at all, Ultra is the line worth your money. The 20 mil wear layer carries a lifetime residential and 10-year light commercial warranty. The 8mm total thickness handles subfloor variations better than the thinner lines. The attached IXPE pad cuts impact sound for upstairs installs.
Ultra plank dimensions are 7 inches wide by 48 to 60 inches long, which reads as wide-plank in normal rooms and helps visually expand smaller spaces. At $3.49 to $4.99 per square foot, it competes directly with mid-grade Mohawk SolidTech and Shaw Floorte Pro on price and beats most of the no-name Amazon SPC products on visual quality.

Total installed costs for SmartCore in 2026:
- SmartCore Naturals: $4.50 to $6.50 per square foot installed
- SmartCore Pro: $5 to $7 per square foot installed
- SmartCore Ultra: $6 to $8.50 per square foot installed

Lowe’s installation services run roughly at market rate. The work is subcontracted, so quality varies by region. Get the installer’s name before scheduling and check independent reviews.
How SmartCore Compares to Competitors
SmartCore Ultra vs Mohawk SolidTech: roughly identical on specs. SmartCore wins on Lowe’s pricing during sales (frequent), Mohawk wins on independent dealer service. SmartCore Ultra vs COREtec Plus: COREtec edges out on visual realism but costs $1 to $2 more per square foot at comparable wear layers. SmartCore Ultra vs Shaw Floorte Pro: very close, slight Shaw edge on click stiffness.
SmartCore Ultra vs LifeProof (Home Depot’s exclusive): LifeProof carries a slightly thicker pad and broader color selection but uses a different (and slightly more finicky) click system. Lowe’s vs Home Depot is mostly preference between two competent products at similar prices.
Subfloor Requirements and Prep
SmartCore installs over wood subfloor, concrete slab, existing vinyl, or ceramic tile (with leveling). The subfloor must be flat to within 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Concrete needs ASTM F1869 calcium chloride moisture testing — above 3 pounds per 1000 square feet per 24 hours requires a moisture mitigation primer.
Don’t install SmartCore over carpet (locking joints will fail), thick foam underlayment (already attached IXPE means doubling up causes deflection), or any subfloor with visible water damage.
Warranty Reality
SmartCore Ultra carries a lifetime residential warranty plus 10 years light commercial. The fine print: you need the original receipt, lot numbers, and proof of professional installation following the manufacturer spec. Self-installed warranty coverage is more limited.
Warranty claims through Lowe’s move through a Shaw-managed process and typically take 4 to 8 weeks for resolution. Document everything at install with photos.
Pet Households
SmartCore Ultra’s 20 mil wear layer handles dog claws and cat scratches well. Two large dogs and a 75-pound puppy haven’t left visible damage on my install after 36 months. SmartCore Naturals at 12 mil is more vulnerable — you’ll see micro-scratches under raking light within the first year.
Final Take
SmartCore LVP earns its place in the market on the Ultra tier specifically. The Naturals and Pro tiers face stronger competition at their price points and don’t stand out. Skip them, go straight to Ultra, and you’ll get rigid-core LVP that competes with brands costing 20 to 40 percent more.
