Standard Rise and Run for Stairs: A Complete Guide for Homeowners

A staircase that walks well does not feel like work, while a code-legal stair with the wrong proportions makes you trip on the way up and brace on the way down. Standard rise and run for stairs in residential construction follows two rules: the IRC code maximum of 7-3/4 inch riser height with 10-inch minimum tread depth, and the time-tested rule that rise plus run should equal between 17 and 18 inches. The second rule matters more for comfort than the first does for safety.

The 3/8-inch variation rule trips up more amateur stair builders than any other. If your top riser is 7-1/2 inches and your bottom riser ends up at 8-1/8 inches because you forgot to account for the finished floor thickness, the inspector will require demolition and reframing.

The 17 to 18 Inch Rule

  • 7-1/4 in rise + 10-3/4 in run = 18 in (well-balanced, residential standard)
  • 7-1/2 in rise + 10-1/2 in run = 18 in (slightly steeper, common in compact footprints)
  • 7-3/4 in rise + 10 in run = 17-3/4 in (maximum allowed, feels noticeably steeper)

A stair where rise + run totals 16 feels too steep. One that totals 19 feels too shallow and forces you to take strides that do not match natural walking. The 17 to 18 sweet spot lines up with average human gait length under typical climbing speeds.

How to Calculate Your Stair Layout

Five steps get you from a finished floor-to-floor measurement to the actual riser and tread numbers.

  1. Measure total rise: From finished floor of the lower level to finished floor of the upper level. Include the upper finish floor thickness — a common error is measuring to the subfloor
  2. Divide by an estimated riser height: 7-1/4 inches is a good starting target. A 108-inch total rise divided by 7.25 = 14.9 risers. Round to 15
  3. Recalculate exact riser height: 108 inches ÷ 15 = 7.20 inches per riser. Below the 7.75 maximum, so legal
  4. Choose tread depth: 18 minus 7.20 = 10.80 inches. Use 10-3/4 inch treads. Above the 10-inch minimum, so legal
  5. Calculate total run: 14 treads (one less than risers, because the upper floor counts as the top “tread”) × 10.75 = 150.5 inches of horizontal run

That 150.5-inch run plus required landing space (36 inches minimum at top and bottom) tells you whether the stair fits in your floor plan. If it does not, you need either a turn (winder or landing-with-turn) or steeper risers.

Common Layout Pitfalls

Three layout errors account for most stair-related re-dos.

The fundamental constraint on stair design is that you have a fixed total rise and a limited horizontal floor space. Steeper stairs (taller risers, shorter treads) save floor space but feel uncomfortable. Shallower stairs (shorter risers, deeper treads) feel gracious but consume more square footage.

A formal staircase in a 2,800 sq ft home might use 6-3/4 inch rises with 12-inch treads (rise + run = 18.75) — slightly outside the comfort window because the gentle slope reads as elegant and slow. A tight townhouse stair might run 7-3/4 inch rises with 10-1/4 inch treads (18 even) to stay legal in a small footprint while still walking acceptably.

Verifying Before You Build

Before cutting stringers, build a quick mock-up. Stack 2×4 blocks to your calculated riser height, set a board on top to your calculated tread depth, and walk a few simulated steps. Most laymen can feel the difference between a comfortable 7-1/4 by 10-3/4 stair and a tight 7-3/4 by 10 stair within 30 seconds.
