Turf Underlayment: What Goes Under Artificial Grass

The most common reason artificial grass looks great for one season and terrible the next is what you cannot see: the base. A proper turf underlayment is the layered foundation beneath the synthetic grass, and it controls drainage, levelness, firmness, and weed growth. Roll turf over bare dirt and you will get puddles, lumps, and weeds poking through within months. Build the right base and the same turf stays flat, drains fast, and feels good underfoot for a decade or more.

The Layers of a Proper Turf Base

A complete artificial turf installation is a system of stacked layers, each doing a specific job. From the ground up, a typical build looks like this:

  1. Excavated subgrade: The native soil, dug down a few inches and compacted.
  2. Weed barrier: A geotextile fabric that suppresses weeds while letting water pass.
  3. Aggregate base: Crushed rock that provides drainage and a stable, compactable foundation.
  4. Bedding or leveling layer: A finer crushed material screeded smooth.
  5. Shock pad (optional): A foam underlayment for cushioning, used under play and pet areas.
  6. The turf itself: Secured and, in most cases, infilled with sand.

Skipping or shortcutting any layer shows up later as drainage problems, settling, or a surface that feels hard and uneven.

The Compacted Aggregate Base

The aggregate base is the workhorse of the whole system. Most installers excavate about 3 to 4 inches of native soil, more in clay-heavy or poorly draining areas, and replace it with crushed rock. A common approach uses crushed stone such as a 3/4-inch minus product for the main base, topped with a finer crushed material or decomposed granite as a leveling course.

Compaction is what makes it last. The base should be compacted with a plate compactor in lifts, watering lightly to help it settle, until it is firm and stable enough to walk on without leaving footprints. A poorly compacted base settles unevenly over time, which is the leading cause of dips and wrinkles in finished turf.

Drainage Comes First

Artificial grass is porous, but it can only drain as well as the base beneath it. Crushed aggregate creates the open void space that lets water percolate down and away rather than pooling on the surface. In areas with heavy clay soil that drains slowly, installers may add a deeper aggregate layer or perforated drainage pipe to carry water off.

Grade the base with a slight slope, roughly a 1 to 2 percent fall away from buildings, so water has somewhere to go. A perfectly flat base in a low spot will hold water no matter how good the materials are.

The Weed Barrier Layer

A geotextile weed barrier laid over the subgrade blocks weeds from growing up through the turf while still allowing water to drain through. Use a quality woven or non-woven landscape fabric rather than thin plastic sheeting, which traps water and defeats the drainage you worked to build. Overlap seams by several inches and pin the fabric down so it does not shift during the base build.

Some installers place a second weed barrier directly under the turf as well, but at minimum you want one robust layer over the prepared soil.

Shock Pad and Foam Underlayment

A shock pad is a foam underlayment installed between the compacted base and the turf, and it is where a lot of homeowners have questions. It is not always necessary, but it adds real value in specific situations:

  • Play areas: Foam padding increases the fall-height safety rating, important under playsets.
  • Pet runs and lounging areas: Adds a softer, more comfortable feel underfoot.
  • Putting greens: Helps create a consistent, slightly cushioned surface.

Shock pads come in rolls or interlocking panels and must sit on a flat, well-compacted base; they cannot smooth out a lumpy foundation. Be aware that some closed-cell pads drain only through perforations, so confirm the product is rated for outdoor turf use and allows water through.

Special Considerations for Pet Areas

If the turf is for dogs, the base needs a slightly different approach to handle urine and keep odor down. Drainage is even more critical, so installers often use a more open, free-draining aggregate and ensure a strong slope so liquid passes straight through rather than pooling. A permeable shock pad with drainage holes can help, but avoid solid foam that traps moisture. Many pet installations also use an antimicrobial sand infill or a deodorizing infill on top of the turf, and the base should be rinsable. Skimping on drainage in a pet area is the fastest route to lingering odor.

Installing Over Existing Hard Surfaces

You will not always be building over soil. Turf can go over concrete, pavers, or a balcony, and the base requirements change. On a solid surface you skip the aggregate and instead lay a foam shock pad or drainage underlayment directly over the cleaned, sloped hard surface, which provides cushioning and a path for water to reach existing drains. The hard surface must already slope toward a drain, since water cannot percolate through concrete. For rooftop or balcony turf, a perforated drainage tile mat under the turf keeps water moving and prevents pooling against the slab.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few errors account for most failed turf installations. Installing over bare or organic soil instead of an aggregate base leads to settling and weeds. Under-compacting the base creates dips. Forgetting to slope for drainage produces standing water and odor in pet areas. And using the wrong fabric, solid plastic instead of permeable geotextile, traps water beneath the turf.

Take the time to excavate, layer, and compact properly. The base is invisible once the grass is down, but it is the single biggest factor in how the lawn looks and performs.
