Direction
Run planks parallel to the longest wall or the primary light source in the room. In narrow hallways, planks should always run lengthwise. When covering multiple connected rooms, maintaining the same plank direction creates continuity and flow.
Starting Wall
Begin at the most visible wall, typically the one you see first when entering the room. If this wall is not straight, you will need to scribe and cut the first row to follow the wall’s contour.
Stagger Pattern
Offset end joints by at least 6 inches between adjacent rows. Many professionals recommend 8 to 12 inches for the most natural appearance. Avoid creating H-patterns where end joints in alternating rows align, which looks artificial and can weaken the floor.
First and Last Row Width
Calculate whether the last row will be too narrow (less than one-third of a plank width). If so, trim the first row narrower to balance both sides. A sliver of a plank at the wall edge looks unprofessional and is structurally weak.
Click-Lock Installation Technique
The technique varies slightly between manufacturers, but the general approach is consistent.
Long Side Connection
Hold the new plank at approximately 20 degrees and insert its tongue into the groove of the installed plank. Press down firmly while pushing forward slightly. You should feel and hear the lock engage. The plank should lie flat without any gap at the seam.
Short End Connection
After connecting the long side, align the short end with the previous plank in the row. Use a tapping block against the end and tap gently with a rubber mallet to close the end joint. Never strike the plank directly or use a hammer without a tapping block.
Last Plank in Each Row
Measure the remaining distance to the wall, subtract 1/4 inch for the expansion gap, and cut the plank to length. Use a pull bar hooked over the plank’s end and tap the pull bar with a mallet to draw the plank tight against the previous piece.
Handling Transitions
Room-to-Room Transitions
Use T-molding transitions where vinyl meets vinyl or another floating floor at the same height. Install the transition track before laying the final rows on either side. The track screws to the subfloor and the T-molding snaps into the track.
Height Transitions
Reducer strips bridge height differences between vinyl and a lower floor (like carpet). End caps finish the edge where vinyl meets a vertical surface like a fireplace or a sliding door track.
Doorways
Undercut door frames and casings so the vinyl slides underneath rather than butting against them. Use a scrap plank as a height guide when making the cut with an oscillating multi-tool or jamb saw.
