You do not need to memorize NEMA numbers to identify your plug. Just count the prongs or the slots:
- Three prongs / three slots = older 3-prong NEMA 10-30 (neutral and ground combined).
- Four prongs / four slots = newer 4-prong NEMA 14-30 (separate, dedicated ground).

Why 4-Prong Is the Current Code

One more point of clarity: not every dryer uses one of these heavy 240-volt plugs. Gas dryers heat with a gas burner and only need electricity to run the motor, controls, and drum light, so they plug into a standard 120-volt three-prong household outlet, just like most appliances. If your dryer uses a normal-looking wall plug, you have a gas dryer, and the 3-prong versus 4-prong question does not apply.
