LVP vs. LVT

LVP vs. Laminate

Pros and Cons of LVP

Advantages

Waterproof: LVP is completely waterproof. The vinyl material doesn’t absorb water, swell, or warp. This makes it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and basements where hardwood and laminate would be risky choices. I’ve installed LVP in countless kitchens where dishwasher leaks and cooking spills are regular occurrences — the floor handles them without issue.

Affordable: Quality LVP costs significantly less than hardwood and comparable to or less than laminate. When you factor in the simpler installation (especially for DIY), the total project cost for LVP is hard to beat.

Easy installation: Click-lock LVP is one of the easiest flooring products to install. The planks snap together without adhesive, nails, or specialized tools. Limited resale value impact: Real hardwood adds measurable value to a home. LVP’s impact on resale value is less established, though quality LVP in good condition is viewed favorably by most buyers.

Cannot be refinished: When the wear layer is worn through, the floor must be replaced. It cannot be sanded and refinished like hardwood. However, quality LVP with a thick wear layer will last 15-25 years before replacement is needed.

Environmental concerns: LVP is a petroleum-based product that’s not biodegradable. While some manufacturers offer recycling programs, most LVP ends up in landfills at the end of its life. If environmental sustainability is a priority, this is a legitimate concern.

Susceptibility to heavy furniture: Very heavy furniture can dent flexible LVP over time. SPC products resist this better than WPC, but extreme point loads (like piano legs or loaded bookcases without furniture pads) can still cause indentation.

Budget LVP ($1.50-$3.00 per sq ft): Thin wear layers (6-12 mil), basic visuals, limited pattern variety. Suitable for rental properties, guest rooms, and temporary installations. I don’t recommend budget LVP for main living areas or high-traffic zones.

Mid-range LVP ($3.00-$5.50 per sq ft): The sweet spot for most homeowners. Products feature 20-mil wear layers, realistic EIR textures, rigid SPC or WPC cores, and attached underlayment. Brands like LifeProof, COREtec, and NuCore offer excellent mid-range options.

Professional installation: $2-$5 per square foot for labor, depending on your market and the complexity of the installation. This includes subfloor preparation, underlayment (if not attached), plank installation, and transitions.

For a typical 500-square-foot main living area, a mid-range LVP floor professionally installed runs approximately $2,750-$5,250 total. That’s roughly 40-60% less than comparable hardwood.

LVP Installation Methods

Click-Lock Floating

This is the most common LVP installation method and the easiest for DIY. Planks lock together through interlocking tongue-and-groove edges, creating a floating floor that rests on top of the subfloor without being attached to it. The floor “floats” on an underlayment and an expansion gap around the perimeter accommodates natural expansion and contraction.

For successful click-lock installation, the subfloor must be flat (within 3/16″ over 10 feet), clean, and dry. Most imperfections can be corrected with self-leveling compound. I always recommend dry-laying the first two rows before committing to ensure the layout works and the pattern looks natural.

Glue-Down

Glue-down installation uses adhesive to bond each plank directly to the subfloor. This produces the most stable, solid-feeling floor and is preferred for large open areas and commercial installations. The subfloor must be perfectly smooth and free of contaminants that could interfere with adhesion.

Loose-Lay

Loose-lay installation relies on the weight and friction of the planks to hold them in place. It’s the fastest installation method and allows individual planks to be replaced easily. Loose-lay works best in smaller rooms and areas with furniture to help anchor the floor. In large open areas, loose-lay planks can shift over time.

Where to Use LVP Flooring

Basements: LVP’s moisture resistance and dimensional stability make it ideal for below-grade installations. SPC products are particularly well-suited because they handle temperature fluctuations and concrete subfloor moisture better than WPC.

Living rooms and bedrooms: WPC LVP’s comfort and sound absorption make it an excellent choice for living spaces. The wide range of wood-look designs allows you to match any interior style.

Laundry rooms and mudrooms: These hardworking spaces benefit from LVP’s durability and water resistance. Thicker wear layers handle the heavy foot traffic and abuse these rooms endure.
