Tiny flies hovering around the sink in a room with no fruit in sight is a puzzle that sends thousands of homeowners searching for answers. In the majority of cases they are drain flies (also called moth flies or sewer gnats), a completely different insect that breeds in the organic film coating the inside of your drains. Drain Fly or Fruit Fly? Look Closely First
Correct identification takes ten seconds and determines your entire strategy. Catch one on a piece of tape or look at one resting on the wall:

True fruit flies in a bathroom usually indicate something fermenting nearby — a trash can, a forgotten cup, or a mop bucket — because bathrooms rarely offer the sugars they need.
Where They Are Actually Breeding
Drain flies lay eggs in biofilm — the slimy layer of bacteria, soap scum, hair, and skin cells that coats the inside of drain pipes, especially in the overflow passage and the first vertical foot of pipe. Larvae live in that gel, feed on it, and emerge as adults in 1 to 3 weeks. Common breeding sites in a bathroom include the sink drain and its overflow channel, the tub or shower drain, the toilet tank (rarely), the condensate line of a nearby HVAC unit, and — a frequently missed one — the water trapped under a rarely used floor drain or in the trap of a guest bathroom that sits unused for weeks.
A dried-out P-trap is a special case worth checking. When a sink or floor drain goes unused, the water seal in the trap evaporates within a few weeks, opening a direct highway from the sewer line into your bathroom for both flies and odor. If the problem bathroom is a rarely used one, pour a quart of water down every drain and see if the flies taper off within two weeks.
Confirm the Source with a Simple Tape Test
Before scrubbing every drain in the house, find the active one. Dry each suspect drain area, then place a strip of clear packing tape sticky-side-down across the drain opening, leaving gaps so airflow is not fully blocked. Leave it overnight, ideally over two or three nights since emergence is intermittent. Flies emerging from that drain will stick to the tape on their way out. A drain that catches several flies is your breeding site; a clean tape means look elsewhere — the neighboring bathroom, a floor drain, or the sink overflow hole, which you can test by taping over it separately.
The Fix: Physically Remove the Biofilm
Here is the part that saves you money: pesticide sprays and pouring bleach or boiling water down the drain rarely solve a drain fly problem. Bleach flows past the biofilm too quickly to penetrate the gel layer where larvae live, and killing adult flies does nothing about the next generation emerging in days. This is textbook integrated pest management — remove the habitat and the population collapses on its own.
- Remove the drain cover or pop-up stopper. Pull out hair and gunk with a $3 plastic drain zip tool.
- Scrub the accessible pipe walls with a stiff, long-handled drain brush (about $5 to $10). Work the first 12 inches thoroughly — that is where most larvae live. Scrub the underside of the drain flange and the stopper mechanism too.

If They Really Are Fruit Flies
Red eyes and darting flight mean you are dealing with actual fruit flies, and the bathroom is a satellite of a breeding site somewhere else. Hunt for fermenting organic material: a bathroom trash can with sugary residue, a recycling bin down the hall, overripe fruit in the kitchen, a splash of juice under an appliance, or a slow drain in the kitchen where food waste accumulates. Clean or remove the source, then set a simple trap for the remaining adults — a small jar with an inch of apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish soap catches them reliably within days. Traps alone never end an infestation while the breeding material remains, but they mop up quickly once it is gone.
Keeping Them from Coming Back
Prevention is a maintenance habit, not a product. Once a month, pull visible hair from bathroom drains and give high-use drains a hot-water flush; every few months, run an enzyme cleaner overnight as upkeep. Pour water into unused drains and floor drains every couple of weeks to keep P-traps sealed. Fix drips and standing-water spots — under-sink leaks and chronically wet grout lines can support breeding too. Keep bathroom trash cans lined and emptied weekly.
Call a plumber or pest professional if flies persist after two rounds of thorough drain cleaning, because stubborn cases sometimes trace to a broken sewer pipe under the slab, a wet-vented line, or a hidden leak feeding an inaccessible breeding site — problems worth diagnosing early. But for the typical household, a drain brush, an enzyme gel, and two weeks of patience end the problem for good, no pesticides needed.
