Standard 18×16: The Right Default for Most Homes

Every screen decision is a three-way trade between bugs, breeze, and view, and the openness percentage on the spec sheet quantifies it. Standard 18×16 fiberglass runs about 60 percent open area; 20×20 fine mesh drops to roughly 50 percent; pet screen lands near 45; and an 80 percent solar screen can fall below 25 percent open. In practical terms, swapping a whole house from standard to fine mesh reduces cross-ventilation noticeably on still evenings — worth it in midge country, wasted everywhere else.

Visibility follows strand diameter more than mesh count.
