Understanding wire color meaning in US residential wiring isn’t just useful — it’s the difference between a working ceiling fan and a house fire. The US Residential Wire Color Code

The National Electrical Code (NEC) sets strict rules for some wire colors and leaves others to convention. Here’s the breakdown for standard single-phase residential circuits:

Ground Wires: Bare Copper and Green

The equipment ground is bare copper in most Romex or green insulated in conduit wiring. Its job is to carry fault current safely back to the panel’s ground bar, tripping the breaker before anyone gets shocked. Ground wires should never carry current during normal operation — if they do, you have a wiring fault or a shared neutral problem that needs diagnosis.
