Hot Wire Color: Complete Guide for Homeowners

The wrong assumption about which wire is hot can kill you, and color alone is not always a reliable guide. Hot wire color in US residential wiring is usually black, but red and blue show up constantly in three-way switches, multi-wire circuits, and 240-volt runs. Add in older homes with faded cloth insulation and DIY work done by someone who skipped the color rules entirely, and every wire becomes a question until you prove otherwise. This guide walks through the standard colors, the exceptions, and the testing steps that keep you safe.

Standard US Hot Wire Colors

When White Is Actually Hot

A white wire with black tape or paint on the last 1 to 2 inches is a re-identified hot conductor. This is code-legal in specific cases: switch loops in older installs, the hot side of a 240V circuit that uses a cable with only black and white conductors, and some three-way wiring configurations. If you see a white wire with electrical tape marking, treat it exactly like a black wire.

NEC 2011 and newer generally requires a neutral at every switch location, so modern switch loops in new construction use proper three-conductor cable instead of re-identifying white. Still, older homes are full of marked whites.

240-Volt Circuits: Two Hots, No Neutral Needed (Sometimes)

A standard dryer or electric range circuit uses two hots (black and red), one neutral (white), and one ground (green or bare). The voltage between black and red measures 240V. The voltage between either hot and neutral measures 120V. Some pure 240V loads (baseboard heaters, some well pumps) only use the two hots and a ground.

Never assume a white wire in a 240V cable is neutral without testing. In some installations, all conductors carry hot voltage.

Three-Way Switches: Travelers Can Be Any Hot Color

In a three-way switch setup, the two traveler wires between switches are typically red and black on modern 14/3 or 12/3 cable. Either or both can be energized at any given moment depending on switch position. The common terminal (usually darker or brass-colored screw) is the true hot source or switched output to the fixture.

When testing three-way circuits, flip the switches through all four possible combinations and verify voltage on each wire. Skipping this step is how DIYers get zapped reinstalling a simple dimmer.

Older Homes: Faded, Cloth, and Non-Standard

Pre-1960 homes often have cloth-insulated wire where black and red have faded to dusty brown, and white neutrals look yellowed. Knob-and-tube circuits use separated individual conductors with no consistent color code for hot versus neutral. Aluminum wiring from the late 1960s and early 1970s generally follows modern color standards, but the aluminum itself makes every connection more hazardous and should be inspected by an electrician.

In old homes, assume nothing based on color. Use a tester at every wire before touching.

How to Test Which Wire Is Hot

  1. Kill the breaker and verify at the outlet or fixture with a non-contact voltage tester. Listen for the beep and watch the LED; a legitimate tester lights up within 2 inches of an energized conductor.
  2. Remove the device and separate the wires so none touch each other or grounded metal.
  3. Restore power at the breaker (only if you can confirm no exposed conductors are shorted).
  4. Use a multimeter set to AC volts, 200V or higher range. Touch the black probe to a known ground (bare copper, metal box, or green wire). Touch the red probe to each suspect wire in turn.
  5. Record voltages: 110 to 125V indicates a hot conductor; 0V is neutral or deenergized.
  6. Kill the breaker again before making any connections.

Color Rules Are Not Enforceable on Old Work

Homes owners and unlicensed handymen have been splicing wires for 80 years, and some of what they did was dead wrong. You will find hot whites without tape markings, neutrals on black conductors, and mystery splices buried behind drywall. Never trust color in a junction box you did not wire yourself. A $15 non-contact tester and a $30 multimeter are the only reliable tools.

Special Cases to Know

Switched Outlet Circuits

Only one of the two halves of a switched duplex receptacle is controlled. The hot side is usually black, and the switched side uses red or a separate black with the tab broken off the hot side of the outlet.

Knob-and-Tube Splices

Hot and neutral run on separate ceramic knobs. There is no cable jacket. Both wires look identical in cloth insulation. Testing is mandatory.

Whole-House Generator Transfer Switches

Generator-fed circuits may temporarily carry hot voltage on conductors that were off at the main panel breaker. Always turn the generator transfer switch to “off” or “utility” before working.

Solar Installations

DC wiring on the solar panel side uses red for positive and black for negative, the opposite of AC convention. AC wiring on the inverter output follows standard color codes.

Commercial vs Residential Colors

208V three-phase commercial systems use black, red, and blue for the three hot phases, with white or gray neutral and green ground. 480V systems use brown, orange, and yellow. If you find blue or orange hot wires in a home, someone likely pulled commercial feeder wire for a sub-panel or high-amp circuit; the hots still work the same way at residential voltages.
