Open any junction box in a US home built after 1965 and you will find the same three or four colored conductors staring back at you. Misread one of them and you can fry a $400 dimmer, energize the metal frame of a dishwasher, or light up your basement. Electrical wiring colors follow a consistent National Electrical Code (NEC) pattern in residential branch circuits, and learning that pattern is the difference between a confident DIYer and an emergency call to a licensed electrician at $150 per hour after hours.
The Standard US Residential Color Code
The NEC does not technically dictate insulation color for ungrounded conductors below 480 volts, but the industry has standardized around a system that every electrician, inspector, and home center stocks. Memorize this one chart and 95 percent of residential wiring makes sense.
- Black: ungrounded “hot” conductor, 120V or one leg of 240V
- Red: second hot, used for 240V circuits, three-way switches, or smoke detector interconnects
- White: grounded “neutral” conductor, returns current to the panel
- Green or bare copper: equipment grounding conductor, bonds metal parts to earth
- Blue and yellow: travelers in commercial conduit, occasional use in residential
NM-B cable (the white or yellow plastic-jacketed Romex you see in framing) ships with these conductors pre-bundled. 14/2 with ground gives you black, white, and bare copper. 14/3 adds a red.
Black Wires: Your Always-Hot Conductor
Black is the workhorse. Every standard 120-volt receptacle, every light switch, and every general-purpose lighting circuit uses black as the ungrounded hot leg. It carries current from the panel breaker to the device, where the load (lamp, motor, heating element) drops the voltage and sends the return current back through the white neutral.
If you tap a black wire with a non-contact voltage tester (Klein NCVT-3P, $25) and the LED lights up, that conductor is energized. Always confirm with a contact-style multimeter before working. NCVTs occasionally false-trigger near fluorescent ballasts and induced voltage on long runs.
Red Wires and 240-Volt Circuits
Red shows up in three common scenarios. First, the second hot leg of a 240-volt circuit feeding an electric range, dryer, water heater, or central AC condenser. The breaker is a double-pole 30A or 50A, and you measure 240V between the black and red, 120V from either to neutral.
Second, the traveler in a three-way switch loop. When you flip a switch at the top of the stairs and the light at the bottom changes state, red and black are swapping which one carries current to the fixture. Third, the interconnect on hardwired smoke alarms. The red wire signals all alarms to sound when any one detects smoke.
White Wires Are Not Always Neutral
This is the trap that catches new DIYers. In a switch loop run with 14/2, the white conductor is sometimes used as a hot leg back to the switch. Code requires that white wire to be re-marked with black tape or paint at both ends so the next person reading the box knows it is energized. If you see a white wire wrapped with black tape at a switch, do not assume it is neutral.
The 2011 and later NEC also requires a true neutral at every switch box for future smart-switch compatibility. If your house was wired before then and you want to install a Lutron Caseta or similar dimmer, you may need to pull a new cable or buy a no-neutral-required model.
Ground Wires: Green, Green-Yellow, or Bare Copper
The ground conductor is the safety system. It does not normally carry current. Its only job is to provide a low-resistance path back to the panel and the earth so that a short circuit trips the breaker before someone gets shocked. NM-B cable uses bare copper. Conduit installations and appliance whips use green or green-with-yellow-stripe insulation.
Never attach a ground wire to a water pipe alone (modern plastic pipe defeats this) or to a gas line (explicitly prohibited). The ground in every box must terminate on the device, the metal box itself if metallic, and continue to the panel ground bar.
Old Wiring You May Encounter
Homes wired before 1965 often have no ground conductor at all. Knob-and-tube uses two cloth-wrapped conductors, typically black and white, run separately through ceramic insulators. Early Romex (1950s-60s) sometimes used a smaller-gauge bare ground that does not meet modern fault-current requirements.
If you pull a cover and see cloth insulation, fabric braid, or aluminum conductors (silvery, dull, used heavily in 1965-1973), stop. Aluminum branch wiring is a fire hazard at every connection that has not been retrofitted with COPALUM crimps or AlumiConn connectors. Call a licensed electrician for evaluation, not a remodeling handyman.
Safety Procedures Before You Touch Anything
Turn off the breaker. Test the wires with a contact multimeter set to AC volts (you should read close to zero between hot and neutral, hot and ground). Lock the panel with a $10 breaker lockout if other people are home. Wear a long-sleeve cotton shirt, leather gloves, and safety glasses.
Working a hot circuit to “save time” sends about 30,000 people to the emergency room every year in the US. The right approach to electrical wiring colors is to never trust the color alone. Verify with a meter, follow the cable back to its source if you have any doubt, and pull a permit for anything beyond a like-for-like device swap.
Common Wiring Color Mistakes
Three errors come up repeatedly in DIY work and on home inspections.
Wiring a Switch Loop with Unmarked White
The 2011 NEC banned the use of an unidentified white wire as a hot conductor. Older homes have switch loops where the white wire is energized but not re-marked. Every time you open one of these boxes, mark both ends of the white wire with black tape before walking away.
Bonding Neutral and Ground Downstream
Neutral and ground bond at one place only: the main service panel. Subpanels keep neutral and ground completely separate, with a 4-wire feeder. Bonding them at a subpanel creates parallel current paths that can energize metal cases and trip GFCIs randomly.
Reversing Hot and Neutral on a Receptacle
Black goes to the brass screw, white to the silver, and bare/green to the green grounding screw. Reversing hot and neutral makes a lamp’s metal socket shell hot whenever the lamp is plugged in even with the switch off. A $15 plug-in tester catches this in 5 seconds and should be in every homeowner’s tool kit.
The code exists because every rule was written in response to a fire, an injury, or a death. Treating the colors as a roadmap rather than a guarantee is what keeps your work safe and your insurance valid.
