The first time you pull a cover plate and see five different colored wires stuffed into a box behind a three-way switch, it feels like someone is testing you. Understanding house wiring colors is what turns that moment from intimidating into routine. Every color carries a specific job, and the electricians who wired your house were following a convention that has barely changed in 40 years. Read the colors correctly and you can troubleshoot an outlet, replace a switch, or add a ceiling fan without pulling out a code book.
Why Colors Matter More Than Most People Realize
Color coding is not just tradition — it is safety. A wire connected to the wrong screw can energize a metal box, damage an appliance, or back-feed a circuit that was supposed to be dead. The National Electrical Code (NEC) strictly requires only a few colors, but industry convention fills in the rest, and every licensed electrician in the US follows the same playbook.
When those conventions break — usually in DIY jobs or amateur additions — the next person who opens that box has no way to trust what any wire does. Always follow the standard, even if it means adding 6 inches of colored tape to mark a reused conductor.
Black Wires: The Primary Hot
Black is always hot in residential wiring, meaning it carries 120V of live current from the panel. Every black wire is assumed live until tested otherwise. When you see black going into the brass (gold) screw of an outlet, that is correct. Going into the silver screw is a wiring error.
In 240V circuits — dryers, ranges, some water heaters — black is paired with red to form both legs of the 240V feed. Together they measure 240V between them and 120V each to neutral.
Red Wires: The Second Hot
Red shows up in three main situations: as the second hot of a 240V circuit, as the traveler between two three-way switches, and as the switched hot for a second device on a shared circuit (like separately-switched outlets and lights on the same cable).
Red is also common on smoke detector interconnect wires, which is how a smoke detector in your kitchen trips the one in your upstairs hallway simultaneously.
White Wires: Neutral, Usually
White is the grounded neutral conductor in nearly every residential circuit. It returns current to the panel’s neutral bus. White always goes to the silver screw on an outlet or switch, never to brass or green.
The exception is the switch loop. In older two-conductor cable runs to a switch, a white wire may be repurposed as a hot conductor. Code requires it to be marked with black tape or black paint at both ends. If you see a taped-white in a switch box, treat it as hot. If it is not taped and you find 120V on it with a tester, somebody skipped a step — fix the marking before buttoning the box back up.
Green and Bare Copper: Ground
Ground conductors are either insulated green or bare copper. They provide a low-resistance path back to the panel’s ground bus and, ultimately, to the grounding electrode (a ground rod or buried water pipe) driven into the earth outside your house.
Grounds connect to the green screw on a device, to the metal box itself via a pigtail, and to the grounding busbar in the panel. They carry no current under normal conditions — only during a fault, when they trip the breaker. Cutting a ground wire short so it fits better is one of the most common and most dangerous DIY errors. Leave 6 inches of service loop in every box.
Blue and Yellow Wires
Blue and yellow conductors almost always indicate conduit work rather than Romex. A conduit pull uses individual THHN conductors, and electricians color-code by circuit function — blue often for switch legs or lighting runs, yellow for receptacles or secondary circuits.
In ceiling fans with separate light and fan controls, the blue wire is traditionally the light hot. Black is the fan motor. Connect blue to the switched hot for the light and black to the switched hot for the fan, each on its own wall switch.
Understanding 240V vs 120V Color Schemes
The difference trips up most homeowners doing appliance work. A quick reference:
- Standard 120V circuit: black (hot) + white (neutral) + bare copper (ground)
- 240V only (baseboard heater, some water heaters): black (hot) + red (hot) + bare copper (ground), no neutral
- 120/240V (range, dryer): black (hot) + red (hot) + white (neutral) + bare copper (ground)
- Three-way switch run: black (common) + red (traveler) + white (neutral) + bare copper (ground)
Modern dryer and range installations require the 4-wire 120/240V setup. Three-wire range cords are grandfathered in pre-1996 homes but cannot be installed new. If you are replacing a range and see a 3-wire cord, the correct fix is replacing the cord, not forcing a 4-wire range onto old wiring.
What Old Homes Will Throw at You
Pre-1965 homes often have cloth-insulated wiring where all conductors are black by the time you find them — age has darkened the cotton sheath to the same color. Trace the circuit carefully, label as you go, and do not trust color on wiring that old. Any time insulation crumbles when you flex it, the circuit is overdue for replacement.
Knob-and-tube wiring uses two separate conductors — one hot, one neutral — with no ground at all. There is no color code because there is no jacket. If your home still has K&T, most insurers now require replacement before binding a policy, and it is worth getting quotes before closing on an old property.
Test Before You Trust
Color gets you 95 percent of the way there. The last 5 percent comes from a $20 non-contact voltage tester. Shut off the breaker, tag it, verify dead with the tester on every conductor before touching anything. Colors can be swapped by a previous homeowner or marked incorrectly decades ago. Your tester does not care about color — it only reads voltage — and it is the final word.
