Swapping a dryer or range cord sounds like a two-minute job until you look at the terminal block and realize four wires don’t fit where three used to live. A clear 4-prong to 3-prong wiring diagram saves you from a cross-connected neutral and ground, which is the single most common DIY electrical mistake on appliance installs. This guide walks through both directions (4 to 3 and 3 to 4), the bonding strap step everyone forgets, and the NEC rules that decide whether the swap is even legal in your house.

Why Two Cord Types Exist

Before 1996, the National Electrical Code allowed 3-wire cords on 120/240-volt appliances like electric dryers and ranges. The neutral and ground shared one conductor. NEC 2002 tightened that rule and required a separate equipment grounding conductor, making 4-wire cords the standard for new installations. Older homes still have 3-wire 30-amp and 50-amp receptacles in the wall, though, which is why manufacturers ship new appliances without a cord so you can buy whichever type matches your outlet.

The Terminal Block Layout

Open the back access panel on a dryer or range and you’ll find three or four screw terminals in a plastic block. The layout is almost universal:

  • Left terminal: Hot leg 1 (usually black wire, L1)
  • Center terminal: Neutral (white wire)
  • Right terminal: Hot leg 2 (red wire, L2)
  • Separate ground screw or lug: Equipment ground (green or bare copper) on 4-wire setups

On a 3-wire install, the bonding strap (a short metal jumper) connects the neutral terminal to the appliance chassis, making the neutral do double duty as a ground path. On a 4-wire install, that strap has to be removed and the green ground wire takes over the chassis connection.

Converting a 4-Prong Appliance to a 3-Prong Outlet

This is the more common swap, happening when someone moves into an older home. Before starting, confirm the branch circuit is 30 amps for a dryer or 40 to 50 amps for a range, and verify with a multimeter that the receptacle is actually wired correctly. Keep the 4-prong to 3-prong wiring diagram handy as you work so you don’t second-guess which terminal gets which wire.

  1. Unplug the appliance and remove the rear access panel covering the terminal block
  2. Disconnect the 4-wire cord: hot 1 (black), hot 2 (red), neutral (white), and green ground
  3. Install the bonding strap if it was removed, jumping the neutral terminal to the chassis ground screw
  4. Feed the 3-wire cord through the strain relief at the back of the appliance
  5. Connect black to the left hot terminal, red to the right hot terminal, and white (neutral) to the center terminal where the bonding strap already lives

  7. Reattach the strain relief clamp and replace the access panel

Never leave the bonding strap off during a 3-wire install. Without it, the appliance chassis floats and can energize if a hot wire shorts internally.

Converting a 3-Prong Appliance to a 4-Prong Outlet

Moving an old appliance into a newer home requires the opposite swap. Here the critical step is removing the bonding strap.

  1. Unplug and access the terminal block as before
  2. Remove the 3-wire cord and note which wire went where
  3. Locate the bonding strap between the neutral terminal and the chassis ground lug and remove it completely (some strap screws double as terminal screws, so you may reinstall the screw empty)
  4. Feed the 4-wire cord through the strain relief
  5. Connect black to left hot, red to right hot, white to the center neutral terminal (now isolated from chassis), and green (or bare copper) to the dedicated chassis ground screw
  6. Torque to spec, reclamp the strain relief, and button up the panel

If you leave the bonding strap in place with a 4-wire cord, you’ve created a parallel neutral-ground path. On a modern GFCI or AFCI-protected circuit this will cause nuisance tripping. On any circuit it violates NEC 250.142.

NEC Code Considerations

NEC 250.140 still permits the 3-wire connection on existing branch circuits, but only under specific conditions:

  • The branch circuit must have been installed before the 1996 code change
  • The grounded conductor (neutral) must be no smaller than 10 AWG copper for dryers, 8 or 6 AWG for ranges
  • The grounded conductor must be insulated or part of a Type SE cable originating at the service
  • There can be no other paralleled grounding paths

If you’re remodeling, pulling a new circuit, or replacing the receptacle entirely, you must install a 4-wire circuit with a separate equipment grounding conductor. Many inspectors require the upgrade any time a wall is opened near the outlet.

Tools and Safety Checklist

This is a straightforward job but it’s still 240 volts of unforgiving electricity. Before touching anything:

  • Flip the breaker off at the panel and verify with a non-contact voltage tester
  • Use a multimeter to confirm 0 V between each terminal pair
  • Wear safety glasses; terminal screws can slip and spring back
  • Use a cord rated for the amperage (30 A for dryers, 50 A for most ranges) with the correct plug type (NEMA 10-30 or 14-30 for dryers; NEMA 10-50 or 14-50 for ranges)
  • Never splice the cord or use a reducer adapter. These violate code and void the appliance warranty

When to Hire an Electrician

Call a licensed electrician if the receptacle is loose in the wall, the wiring looks aluminum or cloth-insulated, the breaker won’t hold, or you’ve tested and the hot-to-neutral reading is anything other than 240 V plus or minus 5 percent. Expect $150 to $350 for an outlet swap and $400 to $900 if a new 4-wire circuit has to be pulled from the panel. Cheaper than a house fire, and most jurisdictions require a permit anyway.
