This is the question that matters most. Lean toward repair when cracks are narrow, the slab is level, and there’s no displacement. Patch them, seal the slab, and you’ll get years more life.

Lean toward replacement when you see multiple wide cracks, sections that have heaved or sunk more than half an inch, crumbling spalled concrete, or a slab that’s already been patched repeatedly. Choosing the Right Filler for the Job

Match flexibility to exposure. An outdoor slab that bakes in summer and freezes in winter moves a lot, so a flexible polyurethane usually outlasts a rigid cement patch in the same crack.

When to Call a Professional

Get a pro involved if the crack is widening over time, if one side of the slab has dropped, if cracks radiate from a point load, or if the patio is attached to your home and the crack appears to continue toward the foundation.
