The right answer is “it depends on what kind of vinyl you bought,” and getting it wrong is the single most common reason for failed installations where seams pop, planks gap, or the entire floor telegraphs every imperfection in the subfloor below. Why Acclimation Matters at All
Vinyl is a thermoplastic, which means it expands when warm and contracts when cold. A 48-inch plank of SPC with a stone-polymer core can change length by up to 1/16 inch across a 40-degree swing. Multiply that across a 20-foot run and you have 1/2 inch of cumulative movement, which is more than most click-lock systems can absorb without lifting at the joints.
Acclimation lets the planks reach equilibrium with the room they will live in. If you install boards at 60 degrees and the room warms to 80 over the next week, those boards expand against fixed walls and the seams peak. That is what installers mean when they say a floor “telegraphs” or “tents.”
Rigid-Core LVP and SPC: Yes, Acclimate
COREtec, LifeProof, Mohawk Solidtech, Shaw Floorte Pro, Mannington Adura Rigid, and SmartCore Ultra all instruct you to acclimate the unopened boxes flat in the installation space for 48 hours at temperatures between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Some manufacturers allow as little as 24 hours; others spec 72 hours. Always check the printed installation guide that ships in the box because warranties hinge on it.
The room temperature during acclimation should match the temperature the room will see year-round. Installing in an unheated garage in January and then turning the heat on after the fact is a textbook failure pattern that voids the warranty on every major brand.
Sheet Vinyl: Mostly No
Roll-good sheet vinyl from Armstrong, Tarkett, and Mannington is much more dimensionally stable than rigid-core LVP because it bonds fully to the subfloor or to an adhesive bed. Most sheet vinyl needs to sit in the room for 24 hours simply to let the roll relax, not to acclimate moisture or temperature. The manufacturer goal is to flatten the curl from being rolled, not to balance the material with the environment.
If you are installing felt-back sheet vinyl with full-spread adhesive, you can usually unroll, trim, and glue the same day, provided the room sits within the manufacturer’s 65-85 degree window.
Glue-Down LVT: Acclimate, but Differently
Glue-down luxury vinyl tile from Karndean, Armstrong Alterna, and Mannington Adura LockSolid sits between rigid-core and sheet products. The recommended acclimation is typically 48 hours, but the bigger issue is the adhesive’s compatibility window. Pressure-sensitive adhesives like Mapei Ultrabond ECO 373 need to flash at 65-80 degrees with relative humidity below 75 percent to grab properly.
Skip the temperature check and you get either premature tack loss (planks shift underfoot) or extended open time (adhesive smears up through seams). Cheap to fix during install, expensive to fix three weeks later.
How to Acclimate Correctly
- Deliver the boxes 48-72 hours before installation
- Stack the boxes flat, no taller than 6 cartons high, in the room where they will be installed
- Do not break the shrink wrap or open the boxes
- Maintain the room at 65-85 degrees Fahrenheit and 30-60 percent relative humidity
- Run HVAC continuously, not just during the install day
- Test subfloor moisture per ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride) or ASTM F2170 (in-situ RH probe) before laying the first plank
Concrete slabs should test below 75 percent RH with an F2170 probe and below 3 pounds per 1000 square feet over 24 hours with F1869 for almost all rigid-core LVP. Wood subfloors should test below 14 percent moisture with a pin meter like a Delmhorst BD-2100.
What Happens If You Skip It
Three failure modes show up most often. First, end-joint gapping appears 2-6 weeks post-install as cold-installed boards shrink in a warm room. Second, peaking or tenting happens when warm-installed boards expand against walls without a 1/4-inch expansion gap. Third, locking systems fail outright, with click joints separating in heavy-traffic areas like kitchens and hallways.
Manufacturers deny warranty claims when you cannot produce documentation of acclimation and subfloor moisture. That means installers should photograph the boxes in the room, log temperature and RH readings, and save the moisture test printout from the meter.
Special Cases: Lots of Glass, Radiant Heat, Basements
Rooms with significant south-facing glass can swing 30-40 degrees in surface temperature on sunny days. For these installations, choose an SPC product rated to 140 degrees surface temp and extend acclimation to 72 hours. Over radiant heat, ramp the system slowly, raising temperature no more than 5 degrees per day, and never exceed 85 degrees on the subfloor surface. Basements demand a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier under any rigid-core product per the manufacturer spec.
Get the acclimation right and a quality vinyl floor lasts 20-30 years. Get it wrong and you may be ripping it out before the second Christmas.

Professional installers carry a $400-$800 thermohygrometer with data logging, like an Onset HOBO MX2301A, and place it in the install space 48 hours before they show up. The log gives them documented proof of temperature and humidity in case of a warranty claim. DIYers usually skip this step because they trust the thermostat readout, which only measures the air near the ceiling rather than the air near the floor where the boxes sit.
The other pro move is measuring subfloor surface temperature with an infrared thermometer at multiple points across the room. A slab over an unconditioned crawlspace can sit 15-20 degrees cooler than the air, and that differential causes localized condensation under the planks during humid weather. Pre-conditioning the room with HVAC for 5-7 days before install, not just 48 hours, prevents this in problem locations.
