Before choosing any method, check what you are patching into. Walls are usually 1/2-inch board and ceilings often 5/8-inch; a quick measurement at the hole edge tells you what plug stock to buy. The feathering is the whole game. A mesh patch sits slightly proud of the wall, so the compound must ramp down so gradually that raking light cannot find the hump — hence three coats spread over a 12-to-16-inch footprint for a 3-inch hole.
Medium Holes, 6 to 8 Inches: The California Patch
Between mesh-patch and framed-repair sizes lives the trade’s favorite trick, the California patch (also called a hot patch or blowout patch). It uses a drywall scrap’s own paper face as the tape. Cut a drywall piece 2 inches larger than the hole in both directions, then score and snap the gypsum 1 inch in from each edge on the back side — crumble the core away, leaving a flap of face paper all around a plug sized to the hole. Square up the wall opening with a jab saw to match the plug, butter the paper flaps and hole edges with compound, press the plug in until the paper flanges bed flat, and squeegee out the excess. Two feathered coats later, it disappears. No backing, no tape, no fasteners — and it is genuinely strong, because the paper flange bonds like factory-taped seam.
Large Holes, 8 to 12 Inches: Backer Boards
Once a hole passes the size of a dinner plate, the plug needs mechanical support. Square the hole with a jab saw or oscillating tool — check for wires and pipes before every cut — then slip two strips of 1×3 furring or 3/4-inch plywood into the cavity, spanning the opening vertically, and screw through the surrounding drywall into each strip with 1-1/4-inch drywall screws, snugging the strips against the panel’s back. Cut a new drywall plug to fit the opening, screw it to the backers, then tape every seam with fiberglass mesh or paper tape and finish with three coats of setting compound. Match panel thickness — most walls are 1/2 inch, many ceilings 5/8 inch — or the patch will telegraph forever.
Very Large Damage: Cut Back to the Studs
Water damage, plumbing access, and holes past 12 inches call for the framing method. Locate the studs on either side of the damage, snap cut lines to the centerline of each, and remove the damaged rectangle entirely — a rectangle is far easier to patch invisibly than an organic blob. Screw the new panel to the exposed stud faces (add nailers at horizontal edges if needed), then tape and finish as a normal seam.
