Expansion Tank Water Heater: Why You Need One and How to Install

Every time your water heater fires up, the water inside expands. In a closed plumbing system, that expanding water has nowhere to go, building pressure that stresses pipes, fittings, and the water heater tank itself. Sizing the Right Tank

Expansion tank size depends on two factors: water heater capacity and incoming water pressure.

  • 40-50 gallon water heater, pressure under 60 psi: A 2-gallon expansion tank is sufficient. The Amtrol ST-5 and Watts PLT-5 are the most common residential models at $30-$45.

  5. Thread the tank onto the tee fitting and tighten with a wrench. The tank can mount vertically (hanging down from the tee) or horizontally with a mounting bracket.
  6. Turn the water supply back on and check all connections for leaks.
  7. Verify system pressure at a hose bib with a pressure gauge. It should read between 40-80 psi after the water heater completes a full heating cycle.

Maintenance and Lifespan

Expansion tanks last 5-10 years on average. The internal rubber diaphragm degrades over time, eventually becoming waterlogged and losing its ability to absorb expansion. Check yours annually by tapping the bottom of the tank. If it sounds dull and heavy (full of water), the diaphragm has failed and the tank needs replacement.

You can also press the Schrader valve briefly with a pen. If water comes out instead of air, the bladder has ruptured. Replacement is simple since expansion tanks thread on and off in minutes.
