What Geotextile Fabric Actually Does

Geotextiles perform four core functions in the ground: separation, filtration, drainage, and reinforcement. Separation keeps two different materials, like soil and gravel, from mixing and contaminating each other. Filtration lets water pass while holding back soil particles. Drainage channels water along or through the fabric. Reinforcement adds tensile strength to a soft or unstable base so it can carry more load.

That last point is what sets geotextiles apart from garden weed cloth. A driveway base built over soft clay will pump and rut as the gravel sinks into the mud. A geotextile separator between the two stops that migration, so the stone base stays intact and the surface stays level for years. Weed suppression, if you get it, is a side benefit rather than the purpose.

Woven Geotextile Fabric

Woven geotextiles are made by weaving flat polypropylene tapes or yarns into a tight, grid-like sheet, much like a burlap or basket weave. This construction gives them high tensile strength and low elongation, meaning they resist stretching under load. That makes woven fabric the go-to for stabilization and reinforcement.

Use woven geotextile under driveways, parking pads, gravel roads, and heavy-traffic paths where the base needs support. It is also the right choice as a separator beneath aggregate over soft soils. Woven fabric has good tensile strength but relatively low water flow-through compared with nonwoven, so it is not the best pick where you need water to drain quickly through the sheet.

Nonwoven Geotextile Fabric

Nonwoven geotextiles are made by bonding polypropylene or polyester fibers together with heat, needle-punching, or chemicals into a felt-like mat. They are more porous and flexible than woven fabric, with excellent permeability, which makes them the standard for filtration and drainage applications.

Reach for nonwoven fabric when water movement is the priority: wrapping French drains, lining drainage trenches, backing retaining walls, and protecting under-drain systems. Its high flow rate lets water pass freely while the fine fiber structure filters out soil that would otherwise clog the gravel or perforated pipe. Nonwoven is graded by weight, and heavier weights offer more puncture resistance and longer life.

Nonwoven geotextiles are commonly specified by weight in ounces per square yard, and the number tells you a lot about durability. Typical grades run from about 4 ounces up to 8 ounces and beyond for consumer and light-commercial work:

Common Geotextile Applications

Once you match type to function, the use cases become clear. Here is where each shines:

  • French drains and trench drains: wrap the gravel and perforated pipe in nonwoven fabric so soil cannot clog the system.
  • Driveways and gravel bases: lay woven fabric over the subgrade before adding aggregate to stop the stone from sinking into soft soil.
  • Retaining walls: place nonwoven fabric behind the wall and around the drainage stone to keep backfill soil from migrating and plugging the weep system.

How to Choose Between Woven and Nonwoven

The decision comes down to one question: is your priority strength or water flow? If the job is load-bearing and the ground is soft, such as a driveway, a gravel parking area, or a base under pavers, choose woven fabric for its tensile strength and stabilizing grid. If the job is about moving and filtering water, such as a French drain, a wall drain, or a wet slope, choose nonwoven for its high permeability and filtration.

Some projects want both qualities, and there are combination and high-strength nonwoven products that split the difference. When in doubt for a residential drainage job, a 4 to 6 ounce nonwoven covers most needs, while a contractor-grade woven separator handles most driveway and heavy-traffic situations. Reading the manufacturer’s data sheet, which lists flow rate, permittivity, and tensile strength, takes the guesswork out of matching the fabric to the load and the water it will see.

How It Differs From Cheap Weed Fabric

The thin, spun black fabric sold in garden centers as a weed barrier is technically a light nonwoven, but it is a fraction of the weight and strength of true geotextile. It tears easily, offers no meaningful reinforcement, and degrades within a few seasons if exposed to sun. For a mulched flower bed that is fine and even appropriate, since you do not need structural strength there.

But put that same cheap cloth under a gravel driveway and it will shred and disappear into the mud within a year, taking your base stability with it. The distinction is engineering. Geotextile is rated, tested, and specified for a load and a flow. Weed fabric is not. Matching the material to the job is the whole point, and it is why contractors keep both on the truck.

Cost and How Much to Buy

Geotextile is sold in rolls, commonly 3 to 15 feet wide and 50 to 300 feet long, and priced by the square foot or by the roll. A residential-grade 4 ounce nonwoven typically runs in the range of $0.25 to $0.50 per square foot, while heavier woven stabilization fabric and thick 8 ounce nonwoven cost more, often $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot depending on grade and quantity. Buying a full roll almost always beats piecing together small precut sections.

To estimate quantity, measure the length and width of the area, add your seam overlap allowance, and add roughly 10 to 15 percent for trimming and waste. For a drainage trench, remember you often wrap the fabric up and over the gravel, so you need extra width to fold the sides back across the top. It is cheaper to buy a little too much than to run short and create an unplanned seam in the middle of a load-bearing area.

Installation Tips for Geotextiles

Prep the subgrade by removing debris and grading it smooth so the fabric lies flat against firm soil. Overlap seams generously, typically 12 to 18 inches or more on soft ground and load-bearing applications, because seams are where separation fails. Do not stretch the fabric drum-tight; let it conform to the surface so it can carry load without tearing.

When placing aggregate, dump and spread rather than driving equipment directly on the bare fabric, and avoid sharp turns with loaded machinery that can tear it. Keep the fabric covered promptly, since UV exposure degrades polypropylene.
