Cutting and Handling

Outside Corners

Build two-board corners on the wall or pre-assemble: a 3-1/2-inch face over a 2-1/2-3-1/2-inch return, or equal-leg 4-1/2s for chunkier looks (5/4 stock for deep-profile siding). Overlap the wider board over the narrower’s edge consistently on the same side house-wide. Window and Door Surrounds

Install trim over properly flashed openings: sill pan, jamb flashing, then head flashing with a metal drip cap over the head casing kicked out over the siding below — plus the critical 1/4-inch uncaulked gap between that drip flashing and the siding course above. Picture-frame miters look sharp but open with building movement; butt-jointed surrounds (head board overrunning jamb boards) hold their lines far better in fiber cement and read as classic craftsman detail.

Fascia and Rakes

  • Unsealed miters and cut ends: The paint peels in a halo around the joint within 2-3 years. Fix by sanding back to sound film, spot-priming with an exterior acrylic primer, recaulking, and repainting — and seal every cut on the next job.
  • Missing drip caps over window head trim: Water sheets behind the casing and stains the siding below. Retrofit caps slip under the course above with the siding unzipped locally; 30 minutes per window.
  • Trim tight to shingles at roof-wall corners: Wicking rots nothing (it’s cement) but destroys paint and traps debris. Trim boards get cut back to the same 1-2-inch roof clearance as siding.
  • Caulked bottom gaps at band boards: Horizontal trim needs its top flashed and its bottom gap left open to drain. Sealed bottoms trap water against the wall — cut the caulk out.
  • Electro-galvanized brads from a finish nailer: Rust freckles through the paint by year three. There’s no fix short of pulling and refastening; spec stainless from day one.

A note on repairs: unlike wood, damaged fiber cement trim doesn’t get filled and sanded invisible — cracked or broken boards get replaced. Keep two or three offcuts from the original job in the garage; matching a discontinued ColorPlus shade five years later is far harder than storing a spare board today.
