Transition Height and Door Clearances

Total floor build-up affects every threshold and door in the room. Solid 3/4-inch over 1/2-inch plywood subfloor builds up roughly 1-1/4 inches above the joists. Adding to existing floors, the new floor sits proud of adjacent rooms — plan transitions and possibly door cuts accordingly.

Engineered 3/8-inch over an existing subfloor adds only 3/8 inch plus underlayment. Friendly to existing trim and doors.

Premium brands like Mirage, Hallmark, and Lauzon publish 3-4mm wear layers prominently because the spec is competitive. Budget brands often hide thinner specs because publishing them would expose the value proposition.

For a forever home above grade, install 3/4-inch solid hardwood and refinish across decades. For a forever home over slab, choose 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch engineered with 4mm or 6mm wear layer. For a 7-10 year hold, 1/2-inch engineered with 3mm wear delivers solid value. For a quick flip, 3/8-inch budget engineered keeps costs in check while still looking respectable.
