Laminate is the flooring most likely to be ruined before the first box is even opened, because skipping acclimation and expansion gaps causes more failures than bad cutting ever will. Learning how to install laminate wood flooring correctly is well within reach of a patient DIYer: the planks click together without glue or nails, and a typical 200 square foot room takes one long weekend. The difference between a floor that lasts 20 years and one that buckles by July comes down to prep work that costs almost nothing. Follow the sequence below and you will get a result most contractors would sign their name to.

Tools and Materials You Will Need
Gather everything before you start, because a mid-install trip to the store is how joints get left half-locked. The good news is that laminate needs mostly inexpensive gear.
- Tape measure, speed square, and pencil
- Circular saw, miter saw, or a laminate cutter for crosscuts; jigsaw for notches
- Tapping block and pull bar (usually sold as a $20 to $30 installation kit with spacers)
- Rubber mallet
- 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch spacers for the expansion gap
- Underlayment and sheathing tape, unless your planks have pads attached
- 6 mil polyethylene vapor barrier for concrete subfloors
- Utility knife, jamb saw or oscillating multi-tool for door casings
- Knee pads, safety glasses, and a dust mask for cutting
Buy 10 percent more flooring than your measured square footage to cover cuts and mistakes, 15 percent if you are laying planks diagonally. Keep an unopened box afterward for future repairs.
Step 1: Acclimate the Flooring for 48 Hours
Laminate has a high-density fiberboard core, and fiberboard swells and shrinks with humidity. Stack the unopened boxes flat in the room where they will be installed and leave them for at least 48 hours, longer if the boxes came from a cold warehouse in winter. The room itself should be at normal living conditions, 65 to 85 degrees F with humidity between about 30 and 60 percent, and the HVAC should be running.
Skipping this step is the classic rookie mistake. Planks installed cold and dry will expand as they warm up, and with nowhere to go, the floor peaks at the joints or lifts in the middle of the room. Two days of waiting is cheap insurance on a $1,500 floor. While you wait, open a few boxes and shuffle planks from different cartons together so slight color variations spread randomly across the room instead of appearing in blocks.
Step 2: Prep the Subfloor
Laminate floats, so it telegraphs whatever is underneath it. The industry standard for flatness is 3/16 inch of variation over a 10 foot span. Check with a long level or straightedge, mark humps and dips, then grind or sand high spots and fill low spots with a cementitious floor patch. On wood subfloors, screw down any squeaky or loose panels and drive proud fasteners flush.
Remove the old baseboards if you can, or plan to add quarter round later. Sweep and vacuum thoroughly; a single screw left on the subfloor becomes a clicking noise you will hear forever. On concrete, test for moisture. A simple method is taping a 2 foot square of plastic sheeting to the slab for 24 hours: condensation underneath means you have a moisture problem to address before any flooring goes down. New slabs need at least 30 days of curing, and most manufacturers want 60 to 90.
Step 3: Install Underlayment
Underlayment gives laminate its sound absorption, minor smoothing, and moisture protection. Roll out 2 mm to 3 mm foam or combination underlayment perpendicular or parallel to your plank direction per the product instructions, butting seams edge to edge without overlapping, and tape the seams. Over concrete, put down a 6 mil poly vapor barrier first with seams overlapped 8 inches and taped, or use a combination underlayment with a built-in vapor film.
Many mid-range and premium laminates now ship with pre-attached foam pads. If yours does, do not add a second foam layer; doubling up makes the floor too spongy and stresses the click joints until they crack. The only thing you would still add over concrete in that case is the thin poly vapor barrier, which adds no cushion.
Step 4: Plan Your Layout
Run planks parallel to the longest wall or the main light direction, whichever matters more to you visually. Now do the math that saves headaches: measure the room width, divide by the plank width, and check the remainder. If the last row would end up skinnier than 2 inches, rip the first row narrower so both edge rows carry similar width. A 1 inch sliver against a wall looks unmistakably amateur.
Plan your stagger too. End joints in neighboring rows should offset by at least 8 to 12 inches, and avoid repeating a stair-step pattern that puts joints in a diagonal line. Cut ends from finishing one row often start the next, which keeps waste low and the stagger naturally random.
Step 5: Lay the First Rows
Start in a left corner with the tongue side facing the wall, most manufacturers have you trim the tongue off the first row, and place 1/4 to 3/8 inch spacers between the planks and every wall. That expansion gap is non-negotiable: the entire floor moves as one raft with the seasons, and a floor with no room to expand will buckle. Trim will hide the gap later.
- Lay the first row end to end, locking the short ends by angling each new plank into the previous one and folding it down.
- Begin row two with a plank cut to create your stagger.
- Tilt the long edge of each row-two plank into the first row at roughly a 20 to 30 degree angle, lower it flat, then lock the short end.
- Seat stubborn joints with the tapping block and mallet. Never hammer directly on the plank edge, you will crush the locking profile.
Check the first three rows for straightness with a string line or straightedge. Everything after this references those rows, so a banana here becomes a gap at the far wall.
Step 6: Work Through Doorways and Obstacles
Door jambs are the one place you cut the trim instead of the floor. Lay a plank scrap upside down against the jamb, rest your jamb saw or oscillating tool on it, and cut the casing so the flooring slides underneath. It takes two minutes and looks factory-finished, while notching laminate around a jamb never does.
For pipes, drill a hole 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch larger than the pipe diameter, then cut across the plank through the hole’s center, install both pieces around the pipe, and glue the small piece back. At doorways between rooms, most manufacturers require a transition molding with a break in the floating floor whenever a run exceeds roughly 30 to 40 feet, so check your product’s spec sheet before running laminate continuously through a whole level.
Step 7: The Last Row and Finishing Touches
The final row almost always needs a rip cut. Measure the remaining width at several points along the wall, walls are rarely parallel, subtract the expansion gap, and transfer those measurements to the plank before ripping it with a circular saw or jigsaw. Because there is no room to angle-lock the last row against the wall, hook the pull bar over the plank edge and tap it toward you until the joint closes.
Pull all the spacers, then install baseboard or quarter round, nailing trim to the wall, never through the flooring, so the floor can still move underneath. Add transition strips at doorways and thresholds, and check any leftover gaps at sliding doors or hearths for a matching color-fill or trim solution. Vacuum, damp mop lightly, and move furniture back with felt pads under the legs.
Mistakes That Ruin Laminate Floors
Almost every failed laminate job traces back to a handful of preventable errors. Keep this list taped to your toolbox:
- No acclimation: causes peaking joints and buckling within the first season
- Missing or undersized expansion gaps: the number one cause of buckled floors
- Installing over an unflat subfloor: flexing joints click, gap, and eventually break
- Doubling underlayment under pre-padded planks: spongy feel and cracked locks
- Hammering plank edges directly: crushed tongues that never seat again
- Nailing trim into the floor: pins the floating floor and causes gaps elsewhere
- Wet mopping: standing water swells the fiberboard core at every seam
