How to Put Down Laminate Flooring: Step-by-Step Guide

Laminate is the most DIY-friendly hardwood-look flooring on the market — a competent first-timer can install 200 sq ft in two days, including subfloor prep and trim. The challenge of how to put down laminate flooring is in the prep work and the planning, not the click-together planks themselves. This guide walks through the full process: tools, subfloor prep, acclimation, layout, install, and finishing trim.

Tools You Need

Minimum tool list for a DIY laminate install:

  • Tape measure, pencil, chalk line, framing square
  • Utility knife and 4-inch razor scraper
  • Tapping block, pull bar, spacers (rent or buy a $20 kit)
  • Rubber mallet
  • Miter saw or circular saw with a fine-tooth blade for cross cuts
  • Jigsaw with a downstroke blade for irregular cuts
  • Knee pads

For 200+ sq ft, rent or buy a fine-tooth miter saw. Hand-cutting laminate planks with a circular saw works but the cut quality on the visible face suffers without a downstroke or scoring blade.

Subfloor Prep

Laminate floats over the subfloor, but the subfloor must be flat. The TCNA tolerance is 3/16 inch over 10 feet for laminate. Check with an 8-foot straight edge across the room — gaps under the edge larger than 3/16 inch require leveling.

  • Concrete subfloor — fill low spots with self-leveling compound (SLC), sand high spots with a concrete grinder rental ($65/day)
  • Plywood/OSB subfloor — sand high spots, fill low areas with floor patch (Henry 549, Custom Building Products LevelQuik)
  • Existing flooring removal — vinyl can be left in place if flat and well-adhered; carpet must come up; hardwood must be removed or covered with 1/4-inch underlayment

Check moisture on concrete with a calcium chloride test ($25 from a flooring store). Reading must be under 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours for laminate. Higher readings require a moisture barrier underlayment with vapor-block performance.

Acclimation

Laminate must acclimate to the home’s normal indoor humidity for 48 hours before install. Stack unopened boxes flat in the room where they’ll be installed, away from exterior walls and HVAC vents.

Skipping acclimation is the most common cause of buckling, gapping, and warranty claims on laminate. The 48-hour wait costs nothing and prevents 80% of post-install problems.

Underlayment

Two options:

  • Built-in attached underlayment — comes pre-bonded to the plank back, no separate layer needed; Pergo, Mohawk, and most premium laminates include this
  • Separate roll-out underlayment — for laminates without attached pad; foam, cork, or rubber roll, $0.30-1.50 per sq ft

For concrete subfloors, choose moisture-barrier underlayment (Roberts FirstStep, FloorMuffler) or install a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier first. Tape seams of the vapor barrier and run 6 inches up the wall.

Layout Planning

Two layout decisions before opening boxes:

  • Plank direction — run planks parallel to the longest wall (typical) or perpendicular for visual emphasis. Across joists for second-floor stability
  • Starting wall — pick a straight wall, plan the first row to be 1/2 width or wider after rip cuts. Last row should also be 1/2 width or wider

Measure the room width perpendicular to plank direction, divide by plank width, and check the remainder. If the last row would be less than 4 inches wide, rip the first row narrower so both ends are similar widths.

Expansion Gap

Laminate expands and contracts with humidity. Leave a 1/4 to 3/8-inch expansion gap at every wall, transition, and fixed object (cabinet base, fireplace hearth, doorway). This gap gets covered by baseboard or quarter round.

Skipping the expansion gap causes buckling within 6-12 months. The gap is non-negotiable per every laminate manufacturer warranty.

Installation Sequence

  1. First row — set spacers against the wall, click planks together end-to-end. Cut the last plank to fit (typical scrap goes to start row 2)
  2. Second row — use the offcut from row 1 to start (creates the staggered seam pattern). Click long edge into row 1, then end-join
  3. Continue rows — maintain 8 to 16-inch stagger between end seams in adjacent rows; longer staggers look more natural than 50-50
  4. Last row — measure, cut to width, install with pull bar leveraging against the wall (spacers behind)

Click systems vary by brand. Most use a “tilt and lock” angle on the long edge plus a “tap and click” on the short. Read the manufacturer’s specific instructions — Pergo and Mohawk handle slightly differently.

Cutting Around Obstacles

Three common cut scenarios:

  • Door jambs — undercut the jamb with a flush-cut saw (Dremel Multi-Max, Bosch RS5) so plank slides under
  • Toilets and pipes — measure pipe location, drill 1/2-inch oversize hole, cut from edge of plank to hole, fit, glue cut piece back in place
  • Heat registers — measure register opening, mark on plank, drill corner holes, jigsaw the rectangle

Take time on these cuts. A bad cut around a toilet or door jamb is the most-photographed flaw in DIY installs.

Transitions

Where laminate meets carpet, tile, or another room’s flooring, install a transition strip:

  • T-molding — for laminate-to-laminate at doorways
  • Reducer — for laminate-to-lower-floor (vinyl, tile)
  • Threshold — for entries to bathrooms or exterior
  • Stair nosing — for staircases

Match transitions to the laminate brand color when possible. Mismatched stair nosing and T-mold are the most-common giveaway of a DIY install.

Finishing Trim

Reinstall existing baseboards or install new quarter round to cover the expansion gap. Baseboards rest on the laminate; quarter round nails into the baseboard, not the floor. Caulk the top of the baseboard for a finished look.

For first-time installs, plan one full weekend per 200 sq ft. The work goes faster after the first hundred square feet as the click pattern becomes intuitive. A 600 sq ft job is a three-weekend project including breaks.
