An island is the single most-used surface in any modern kitchen, and it is also the most common project to go sideways in a remodel. A poorly executed kitchen island installation shows immediately — uneven countertops, wobbly base cabinets, outlets that violate code, or just bad clearances that make the kitchen miserable to cook in. Get it right and the island becomes the center of gravity for entertaining, homework, meal prep, and morning coffee. Mark the cabinet outline on the finished floor with painter’s tape, set back 3/4 inch on each side to allow for cabinet wall thickness. Cut your cleats to fit just inside the tape lines. For a 4 by 8 foot island, expect to install four cleats — one for each cabinet base. Use 3-inch wood screws or 1/4-inch concrete screws if anchoring to a slab. Running Electrical to the Island
2023 NEC code requires at least one 20-amp receptacle on a kitchen island that has a countertop surface 12 inches or wider. The receptacle can no longer be installed on the side panel facing the seating area because of pull-cord injury risk — it must be on an end panel or in a pop-up receptacle within the countertop itself.
Run a dedicated 12/2 NM-B cable from the panel through the floor (or ceiling if the basement is finished) up into the island base. Install the receptacle in a metal or PVC handy box mounted to the cabinet. GFCI protection is required, either at the device or upstream at the panel. Plumbing for Island Sinks and Prep Sinks

Run 1/2-inch PEX or copper supply lines for hot and cold, and 1.5-inch ABS or PVC for the drain, dropping through the floor and tying into the existing kitchen drain stack in the basement or crawl space. Setting and Leveling the Cabinets
With cleats anchored, electrical roughed, and plumbing in place, set the base cabinets onto the cleats. Shim each cabinet to perfectly level — front to back and side to side. Use composite shims, not wood, in any area subject to moisture. A 4-foot level is the minimum; a 6-foot level is better.
Once level, screw adjacent cabinets together through the face frames or end panels with 1.25-inch trim head screws. Drive 3-inch screws down through the cabinet floor into the cleats. Walk around the assembly and check that drawers and doors open smoothly — any binding means a cabinet is racked.
Countertop Installation
For a quartz or granite countertop, the fabricator templates the cabinet footprint after the boxes are anchored. Expect a 2 to 3 week lead time on stone. The countertop is set onto a bead of clear silicone and supported on plywood or steel brackets if the seating overhang exceeds 10 inches. Beyond 15 inches of overhang, you need steel corbels or a hidden support bracket like a Federal Brace Stealth.
For butcher block, lay a bead of construction adhesive on the cabinet top edges and clamp the slab in place overnight. Pre-finish the bottom face with three coats of mineral oil or polyurethane to prevent moisture wicking from below.
Toe Kicks, Panels, and Finish Carpentry
Most island base cabinets ship with built-in toe kicks. If yours did not, cut and install a 3/4-inch toe kick around the perimeter, set back 3 inches from the cabinet face. Cap the back side of the island — the side facing the seating — with finished end panels matching your cabinet door style. Use 1/4-inch plywood backing if your cabinets are full-back, or apply skin panels with construction adhesive and finish nails.
Wrap any exposed cabinet edges with matching iron-on edge banding or pre-finished molding. Caulk all seams between the countertop and back panels with color-matched silicone.
