Manufactured wood flooring is an umbrella term for engineered and composite wood products that deliver the warmth and appearance of solid hardwood with greater stability and, often, a friendlier price. The thickness of that top veneer matters enormously. A thick wear layer of 3mm or more can be sanded and refinished once or twice over its life, while a thin 0.6mm veneer cannot be refinished at all. Always check this number before buying.
The Pros
Stability heads the list. Because the layered core moves less with humidity, engineered wood can go where solid hardwood struggles, including over concrete slabs, in basements, and with radiant heat. That versatility opens up much of the house.
Installation is more flexible too, since many engineered floors click together as a floating floor or can be glued or nailed down. You still get real wood underfoot and the genuine grain that buyers value, often at a lower cost than comparable solid hardwood. Quality engineered floors can last 25 to 30 years or more.
The Cons
Refinishing is the main limitation. Thin-veneer products cannot be sanded, so deep scratches or wear mean replacement rather than restoration, unlike solid hardwood that can be refinished many times. The quality range is also wide; cheap engineered planks with paper-thin veneers and flimsy cores can dent, delaminate, or wear through quickly.
Like all wood, engineered flooring is still vulnerable to standing water and should not be used in fully wet areas such as bathrooms with frequent flooding risk. And while it often costs less than solid hardwood, good engineered wood is not cheap, so bargain products may disappoint.
Engineered Versus Laminate Versus Solid
Choosing among the options comes down to priorities.
- Choose solid hardwood if you want maximum lifespan and the ability to refinish many times, and your space has stable humidity above grade.

Installation Basics
Engineered flooring installs as a floating click-lock floor, a glue-down, or a nail-down system depending on the product and subfloor. Acclimate the planks in the room for the manufacturer’s recommended period so they adjust to your home’s humidity. The subfloor must be clean, dry, and flat, and floating installations require a perimeter expansion gap hidden by trim.
Over concrete, confirm the slab is dry and use the recommended moisture barrier. When in doubt, professional installation protects both the floor and any warranty.
Wood Species and Finishes
The hardwood veneer on engineered flooring comes in the same species you would find in solid wood, and the choice affects both looks and durability. Oak remains the most popular for its balance of hardness, attractive grain, and value. Hickory and maple are harder and more dent-resistant, suiting active households, while walnut offers rich, dark tones at a softer hardness.
Finishes matter too. Factory-applied finishes, often aluminum-oxide urethane, are extremely durable and cure under controlled conditions, which is why most engineered flooring comes prefinished. Surface treatments like wire-brushing and hand-scraping add texture that hides minor scratches and brings a more rustic character. Matte and satin sheens conceal everyday wear better than high-gloss, which shows every footprint and scuff.
Caring for Manufactured Wood
Maintenance keeps engineered and laminate floors looking their best for years. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove grit that abrades the finish, and clean with products specifically made for wood or laminate rather than water-heavy mopping that can seep into seams.
- Wipe spills promptly, since standing water is the enemy of any wood-based floor.
- Use felt pads under furniture legs and avoid dragging heavy items across the surface.
- Place mats at entries to catch dirt and moisture before they reach the floor.

For engineered floors with a thick enough veneer, a future light sanding and refinish can restore the surface, but for most products, good daily care is what determines how long they stay beautiful.

Engineered hardwood materials generally run $3 to $10 per square foot, with premium wide-plank and thick-veneer products reaching $12 or more. Laminate sits lower, often $1 to $4 per square foot. Professional installation typically adds $2 to $6 per square foot depending on method and subfloor prep.
For a 300-square-foot room, expect a rough installed range of $1,500 to $4,000 for mid-grade engineered wood.
