Maytag appliance service calls jumped 18% in 2025, and the single most common complaint was clothes coming out of the final cycle dripping wet. A Maytag washer not spinning clothes dry usually has one of six fixable causes, and four of them cost under $40 in parts plus an hour of your time. First Check: Load Balance and Size
Modern Maytag top loaders and front loaders include an out-of-balance sensor that drops the final spin RPM from 1,000-1,200 down to 400-600 when the drum detects an uneven load. The clothes still tumble but most of the water stays in the fibers. Open the lid, redistribute the load so it forms a level circle around the agitator (top loader) or fills the drum to about two-thirds full (front loader), and restart the spin cycle only.

Third Check: Drive Belt
Maytag direct-drive top loaders made between 1995 and 2010 use a drive belt that can slip, stretch, or snap. Newer Maytag MVW (Vertical Modular Wash) and Bravos models use direct-drive motors with no belt — if you have one of these and the spin is weak, skip to the motor coupler and clutch diagnostics.
Fourth Check: Motor Coupler (Top Loaders)
The motor coupler is a small plastic-and-rubber part that connects the drive motor to the transmission on Maytag Bravos and MVW direct-drive models. It is engineered to break before more expensive parts do, similar to a fuse. Look for plastic fragments in the bottom of the cabinet or visible rubber on the motor shaft.

Fifth Check: Clutch Assembly

Sixth Check: Drain Pump and Hose

Pull the drain hose from the standpipe and check for clogs of lint, hair, and small clothing items. The pump filter on front loaders is typically behind a small panel at the bottom front — twist counterclockwise to remove, clear debris, and twist back.
Pump replacement runs $85 to $180 parts and 60 to 120 minutes labor. Filter cleaning is a 10-minute DIY task that should happen every 2 to 4 months.
When to Call a Pro Versus Replace
Get a service quote when the diagnosis points to the main control board ($180 to $380 part plus $120 to $200 labor), the drive motor ($240 to $480 part plus $150 to $280 labor), or the transmission ($380 to $620 part plus $200 to $380 labor). Total repair on any of these will run $500 to $1,200. A new Maytag MVW6230HW top loader retails for $899 to $1,299 and a Maytag MHW6630HC front loader runs $1,099 to $1,599 in 2026. If your machine is over 10 years old and the repair exceeds 50% of replacement cost, replace.
For machines under 5 years old, repair almost always makes sense. The 10-year mark is the inflection point where bearings, motor, and electronics start failing in clusters.
Preventing the Problem From Repeating
Wash loads of similar weight together — don’t mix a comforter with light shirts. Load front loaders to two-thirds full, not packed. Use HE detergent in HE machines and dose it correctly; excess detergent foam interferes with spin sensors. Run a tub-clean cycle monthly with Affresh or OxiClean Washing Machine Cleaner at $4 to $9 per package.
