Professional Spray Foam Insulation Kit: What Each Brand Actually Delivers

A professional spray foam insulation kit sells the promise of contractor-quality SPF without hiring a contractor. Done right, you save 40-60% versus pro installation on small jobs like rim joists, crawl spaces, or basement walls. Done wrong, you waste $800-$1,500 on a kit you couldn’t finish before the chemicals went bad. After running 30+ kits across my own properties and rentals, here’s the realistic breakdown of which kits to buy, what they cover, and where DIY hits its limits.

Open-Cell vs Closed-Cell: Pick Before You Shop

Every DIY kit on the market is closed-cell. That’s because open-cell foam requires a higher delivery volume (3-pound product per gallon of finished foam vs closed-cell’s 8-10 pounds), and the equipment to spray it at volume costs $25,000+. For DIY purposes:

  • Closed-cell foam — 6.5-7 R-value per inch, water-resistant, structural rigidity, what every kit delivers
  • Open-cell foam — 3.5-3.8 R-value per inch, water-absorbing, sound-deadening — pro only

For rim joists, crawl spaces, garage walls, and band joists, closed-cell is the right product regardless. For interior soundproofing, you need a pro.

The Three Major Kit Brands

The DIY spray foam market is dominated by three manufacturers. Each sells coverage by board foot (square foot at one inch thick), and each kit weighs 75-265 pounds and ships on a pallet.

Calculating Coverage Accurately

Manufacturers state coverage at one inch of thickness. For most insulation applications, you need 2 inches (rim joists, crawl space walls) or 3 inches (garage ceiling, knee walls). That means a “600 board foot” kit actually covers 300 sq ft at 2-inch thickness or 200 sq ft at 3-inch thickness.

For a typical 1,200 sq ft house, the rim joist around the entire perimeter is about 160 linear feet by 10 inches deep — roughly 130 sq ft of surface area. At 2 inches thick, that’s 260 board feet — one 200 kit will leave you short, two 200 kits is wasteful. The 600 kit is the right answer with leftovers for the garage rim joist.

Brand Spotlight: Foam It Green 602

Foam It Green’s 602 kit is the most-purchased professional spray foam insulation kit by DIY homeowners according to industry sales data, and after running three of them I understand why. The kit covers 602 board feet at one inch (about 300 sq ft at 2 inches), weighs 230 pounds shipped on a pallet, and uses a Class I fire-rated formulation (ASTM E84) that meets most residential code requirements without an intumescent thermal barrier when used in unconditioned spaces like crawl spaces and attics. R-value is 7.1 per inch closed-cell, density is 2.0 lbs/cubic foot. The tank pressures (A-side and B-side) are factory-set, and the included gun has three spray patterns plus a hose extension. What You Need Beyond the Kit

The kit includes tanks, gun, hoses, and a few nozzles. You’ll spend another $150-$280 on supplies the box doesn’t include:

  • Full-face respirator with organic vapor cartridges (3M 6800 at $185)
  • Disposable coveralls with hood (DuPont Tyvek 400, $12-$18 each, buy 3)
  • Nitrile gloves, taped to coverall sleeves
  • Plastic sheeting to mask off non-spray surfaces ($35-$65)
  • Drop cloths for floor protection
  • Heated space — the chemical tanks must be 75-85°F for proper mixing

Temperature Is Non-Negotiable

Spray foam chemistry is highly temperature-sensitive. The A-side (isocyanate) and B-side (polyol blend) tanks must both be between 75 and 85°F when spraying. Cold tanks produce poor mix ratios, foam that doesn’t expand fully, and yields below 60% of rated coverage. Warm the kit indoors for 24-48 hours before use, and keep the work area above 65°F throughout the spray session.

Tiger Foam Quick Cure formulations are slightly more forgiving down to 60°F, but no DIY kit performs well in cold conditions. Schedule the job for late spring through early fall in unheated spaces.

Application Technique That Avoids the Common Failures

Spray in 1-inch passes, allowing 60-90 seconds between passes for the foam to set before adding more. Trying to spray 2 inches in one pass causes overheating, scorching, and uneven cell structure. Keep the gun 12-18 inches from the substrate. Move steadily — pausing creates thick spots that waste material and can shrink unevenly.

The most common failure mode is running out of A-side before B-side (or vice versa) because of off-ratio spraying. If the foam comes out cream-colored and brittle, the mix is wrong — stop and check tank temperatures, hose connections, and pressure.

When to Hire a Pro Instead

For jobs above 1,000 board feet, professional contractors with proper trailer-mounted rigs are nearly always cheaper than DIY kits. The labor time alone on a 2,000 sq ft attic with DIY kits is brutal — 16-24 hours of spraying through respirator with hand fatigue from the gun. Above 1,000 board feet, get three contractor quotes. Below 600 board feet, DIY almost always wins.
