Glue-Down Installation
Each plank is adhered directly to the subfloor using a flexible urethane adhesive. Glue-down provides excellent stability, minimal sound, and works on both concrete and wood subfloors. This method is the top choice for engineered wood over concrete slabs.
Requirements: Clean, flat, dry subfloor. Concrete must be tested for moisture and properly prepared. The adhesive serves as both the bond and a moisture barrier in most cases.
Floating Installation
Planks connect to each other via click-lock or tongue-and-groove profiles and “float” over the subfloor on an underlayment pad. No fasteners or adhesive connect the floor to the subfloor. This is the fastest installation method and works over most subfloor types.
Requirements: Flat subfloor, appropriate underlayment, and engineered planks with click-lock profiles. Floating floors require expansion gaps at all walls and fixed objects.
For most modern installations, we recommend glue-down for engineered wood on concrete and nail-down for solid wood on plywood subfloors. Floating works well for DIY installations and situations where the floor may need to be removed in the future.
