Cutting with a Table Saw (Best for Rip Cuts)

A table saw is the best tool for ripping laminate planks to width. When you need to trim the last row of planks to fit against a wall, nothing beats a table saw for straight, consistent rip cuts.

Setup

Install a fine-tooth blade (60 to 80 teeth) and set the fence to your desired width measurement. Set the blade height to approximately 1/4 inch above the thickness of the laminate — there’s no benefit to having the blade fully extended.

Technique

Feed the laminate through the saw with the decorative face up. On a table saw, the blade rotates downward into the material on the top surface, so face-up orientation produces the cleanest visible edge. Use a push stick for narrow rip cuts and keep steady, even pressure against the fence throughout the cut. Never reach over the blade — use an outfeed support or have a helper catch the piece on the other side.

Why a Table Saw Excels at Rip Cuts

The fence provides a consistent, parallel guide along the full length of the plank. This ensures the ripped plank has an even width from end to end — critical when you’re fitting the last row against a wall that may not be perfectly straight. You can also rip multiple planks to the same width quickly by keeping the fence locked.

Cutting with a Circular Saw

A circular saw (skilsaw) is the most versatile option for laminate cutting. It handles both crosscuts and rip cuts and is portable enough to set up right where you’re installing.

Setup

Use a fine-tooth blade (40 to 60 teeth for a 7-1/4-inch blade). Carbide-tipped blades last longer and cut cleaner than standard steel blades. Set the blade depth to just slightly more than the thickness of the laminate — typically about 1/2 inch.

Technique

Place the laminate plank face-down on your cutting surface. A circular saw blade rotates upward through the material, so the bottom side (facing you as you look down at the saw) gets the cleanest edge. Clamp a straight edge or level alongside your cut line as a guide fence for straight cuts. Cut steadily along the guide — don’t rush, and don’t stop mid-cut.

Crosscuts

For crosscuts, a speed square clamped to the plank makes an excellent 90-degree cutting guide. Mark your measurement, align the speed square, and run the saw base along the square’s edge.

Rip Cuts

For long rip cuts, clamp a straight board or aluminum level as a guide fence parallel to the cut line. Measure the offset between the saw blade and the edge of the saw base plate, and position your guide that distance from the desired cut line.

Cutting with a Jigsaw (Best for Curves and Notches)

A jigsaw is essential for cuts that no straight-cutting tool can make: curves around door frames, notches for pipes, cutouts for floor vents, and irregular shapes.

Blade Selection

This is critical. Use a downcut (reverse-tooth) jigsaw blade for laminate. Standard jigsaw blades cut on the upstroke, which lifts and chips the top surface. Downcut blades cut on the downstroke, pushing into the surface and producing a chip-free edge on the top (decorative) side. If you can’t find a downcut blade, place the laminate face-down and use a standard blade — the bottom surface will be cleaner.

Technique

Mark your cut line clearly on the plank. For straight cuts, use a clamped guide just as with a circular saw. For curves and notches, cut freehand with slow, steady progress. Let the blade do the cutting — forcing a jigsaw causes blade deflection, which produces angled cuts and rough edges. Use a medium orbital setting for speed in the HDF core, but reduce to zero orbital action near the finished edge for the cleanest cut.

Plunge Cuts

For interior cutouts (like floor vents), drill a starter hole in the waste area large enough for the jigsaw blade, then insert the blade and cut along your marked line. Alternatively, you can plunge-cut with the jigsaw by tipping the saw forward onto the front edge of the base plate with the blade running, then slowly lowering the blade into the material. This takes practice — drill a starter hole if you’re not confident.

Score-and-Snap with a Utility Knife

In a pinch, you can cut laminate planks with just a utility knife and a straight edge. It’s not ideal, but it works for basic crosscuts when no power tools are available.

Technique

Place the laminate plank face-up on a flat surface. Align a straight edge along your cut line. Using a sharp utility knife with firm pressure, score the surface deeply along the line — you need to cut through the melamine wear layer and into the HDF core. Make 3 to 5 passes, deepening the score each time. Then position the score line along the edge of a table or board and snap the plank downward. The plank should break cleanly along the score line.

Results

Score-and-snap produces a reasonably clean break on the scored side but a rough, splintered edge on the back side. This is acceptable for edges hidden under baseboards. For exposed edges or tight-fitting cuts, use a saw for better results.

Cutting with an Oscillating Multi-Tool

An oscillating multi-tool (like a Fein or Dremel multi-tool) is invaluable for one specific laminate cutting task: undercutting door frames and casings. When installing laminate flooring, you need to slide the planks underneath door trim rather than cutting the laminate to fit around the trim. An oscillating tool with a flat cutting blade trims the door casing flush with the top of the laminate, allowing the plank to slide neatly underneath.

Technique

Place a scrap piece of laminate (or the actual plank plus underlayment) against the door casing as a height guide. Rest the oscillating tool blade flat on top of the scrap piece and cut horizontally through the casing. The blade follows the height of the laminate perfectly, creating the exact clearance needed. Remove the scrap, slide the laminate plank underneath the trimmed casing, and the result is a flawless, professional-looking fit.

Special Cuts and Techniques

Cutting Around Door Frames

Door frames require a combination of techniques. Use an oscillating tool to undercut the casing (as described above). Then use a jigsaw to notch the laminate plank to fit around the door frame profile. Test-fit the piece dry before committing to the installation. This is the most detail-oriented cut in any laminate installation, so take your time.

Cutting Floor Vent Openings

Mark the vent opening on the plank face. Drill 3/8-inch holes at each corner of the marked rectangle. Insert a jigsaw blade into one hole and cut along the lines to the next hole, repeating until the rectangle is removed. Sand the edges lightly with fine sandpaper for a clean look under the vent cover.

Cutting Around Pipes

For pipes (like plumbing or radiator pipes), measure the pipe location on the plank and drill a hole slightly larger than the pipe diameter (1/4 inch larger provides adequate clearance). Then cut a straight line from the hole to the nearest plank edge. Slide the plank around the pipe, close the cut line behind it, and cover the gap around the pipe with a decorative pipe escutcheon ring.

Angled Cuts for Diagonal Walls

For walls that aren’t perpendicular to your installation direction, use a T-bevel to capture the wall angle, transfer it to the plank, and cut with a miter saw (if it’s a crosscut) or circular saw with a clamped guide (if it’s a rip cut at an angle).

Pro Tips for Clean Cuts

After thousands of laminate installations, these are the tips that consistently produce the best results:

  • Use painter’s tape: Apply a strip of painter’s tape along your cut line before marking and cutting. The tape supports the melamine layer and dramatically reduces chipping, especially with circular saws and jigsaws.
  • Sharp blades only: A dull saw blade or utility knife is the number one cause of chipped, rough cuts. Change blades more often than you think you need to.
  • Let the blade reach full speed: Always let the saw blade reach full RPM before contacting the laminate. Starting a cut before the blade is at speed causes grabbing and chipping.
  • Support the plank fully: Unsupported material vibrates during cutting, causing chips and rough edges. Support both sides of the cut line as close to the blade as practical.
  • Don’t force the cut: Feed the material at a pace the blade handles comfortably. Forcing a fast feed rate overloads the blade and produces rougher cuts.
  • Cut outside when possible: Laminate dust is fine and pervasive. Set up your saw station outside or in the garage to keep the installation area clean.
  • Measure twice, cut once: The oldest rule in woodworking applies double to laminate — you can’t patch a bad cut, you can only waste a plank and cut a new one.
  • Keep spare blades on hand: The melamine layer dulls blades faster than cutting natural wood. Have at least one spare blade ready for every installation.
