Humans pour more concrete than any other manufactured material on Earth — roughly 4 billion tons of cement a year goes into it — and the average American home contains 50 to 100 tons of the stuff in its foundation, driveway, and flatwork. Yet most homeowners cannot say what concrete actually is, why it cracks, or when a $40 bag from the home center is the right call versus a ready-mix truck. What Concrete Is (and Why It Isn’t Cement)

Concrete is a composite: roughly 10 to 15 percent portland cement, 60 to 75 percent aggregate (sand and gravel or crushed stone), and 15 to 20 percent water, plus air. Cement is only the glue — when water hits it, a chemical reaction called hydration grows interlocking crystals that bind the aggregate into artificial stone. Calling a sidewalk “cement” is like calling bread “flour.”

That chemistry drives everything practical about the material. Concrete does not “dry”; it cures, and it will happily harden underwater. More water in the mix makes it easier to place but permanently weaker — every extra gallon per cubic yard cuts strength and increases shrinkage cracking. The water-to-cement ratio, not the brand on the bag, is the biggest quality lever a DIYer controls.

Strength: What PSI Numbers Mean

Concrete strength is stated as compressive strength in pounds per square inch (PSI) at 28 days of curing. Practical benchmarks: 2,500 PSI for footings and non-critical fill, 3,000 PSI for walkways and patios, 3,500 to 4,000 PSI for driveways and garage slabs, and 4,500 PSI or more where deicing salts and freeze-thaw cycles are severe. In cold climates, also order air-entrained concrete — microscopic air bubbles that give freezing water room to expand — or surface scaling will start within a few winters.

Strength builds on a curve: about 50 percent at 3 days, 70 percent at 7 days, and the rated 100 percent at 28. That is why you can walk on a new slab in a day or two but should keep cars off a driveway for at least 7 days.

Bags or a Truck: Getting the Mix Right

Common Residential Projects

Most homeowner concrete falls into a few categories, each with its own rules of thumb:

Why Concrete Cracks — and Controlling It

Fresh concrete shrinks about 1/16 inch per 10 feet as it cures, so it will crack; the entire craft is deciding where. Control joints — tooled or saw-cut grooves one quarter of the slab depth, spaced in feet at two to three times the slab thickness in inches (8 to 12 feet for a 4-inch slab) — give shrinkage a straight, tidy place to happen. Reinforcement (rebar or wire mesh) does not prevent cracks; it holds the cracked pieces tightly together so they cannot shift. Cutting joints after the fact takes a concrete saw with a diamond blade, ideally within 6 to 18 hours of the pour.

Curing is the other half of crack control. Keep new concrete moist and above 50°F for at least 7 days — sprinklers, wet burlap, plastic sheeting, or spray-on curing compound all work. Concrete allowed to dry out in its first week can lose 30 percent or more of its potential strength, permanently.

Decorative Finishes

Plain gray broom finish is the default, but the same slab can leave the truck headed somewhere much better looking. Repairing Concrete Instead of Replacing It

Old concrete rarely needs to come out. Cracks, spalled surfaces, and chipped edges are fixed with the right repair products and prep — see concrete patch — and adhesion between old and new material depends on using a concrete bonding agent correctly. A slab that has sunk but not shattered can be lifted from below for a third of replacement cost via concrete leveling, and a surface that is ugly but sound can be skim-coated to look new with concrete resurfacing. Full replacement is the answer only when a slab is cracked through in multiple directions, heaved by roots or frost, or built on failed base.

Weather: When to Pour and When to Wait

Concrete has a comfort zone — 50°F to 85°F is ideal placing weather — and pushing outside it requires countermeasures, not courage. In heat above 90°F, the working window shrinks toward 45 minutes, plastic-shrinkage cracks open in the surface before finishing is done, and pros respond by pouring at dawn, ordering retarder in the mix, and misting the base ahead of placement. In cold, hydration slows and then stops: fresh concrete that freezes in its first 24 hours can lose half its strength permanently. Below about 40°F, order hot-water batching and accelerator, cover the pour with insulated blankets for three days, and never place concrete on frozen ground — it will settle when the ground thaws. Rain within the first few hours ruins a surface finish; watch the radar and keep plastic sheeting staged. The cheapest weather strategy of all is patience: shifting a pour by 48 hours costs nothing, while a ruined 4-yard slab costs $700 and a demolition weekend.

Working Safely and Hanging Things Later

Two practical footnotes. Wet concrete is caustic (pH around 13) and causes genuine chemical burns — wear waterproof gloves and rinse skin promptly, and never kneel bare-kneed in fresh mud. When to DIY and When to Hire

A useful dividing line is 2 cubic yards and one skill: finishing. Below 2 yards — pads, posts, repairs, a short walk — a fit homeowner with a helper can place and finish concrete successfully on the first try, and the savings run 50 to 70 percent of a contractor’s price. Above that, the material arrives faster than amateur hands can strike, float, and finish it, and finishing mistakes are permanent in a way framing or plumbing mistakes are not. Driveways, garage slabs, stamped work, and anything structural belong with a crew that pours daily; your labor is better spent on the excavation, gravel, and forming, which are unskilled, unforgiving of shortcuts, and half the bid.
