New construction boxes nail or screw directly to the framing before drywall goes up. They are less expensive, around $1-$3, and they give you a rock-solid mount because the box bears against wood on multiple sides.
Old-work boxes use spring tabs, swing-out ears, or expanding clamps to grip the back of the drywall.
