Flooring Insulation Underlayment: Pros, Cons, and Buying Guide

A cold basement floor or noisy upstairs hallway often has nothing to do with the finish flooring — it traces back to what was (or was not) installed underneath. Flooring insulation underlayment handles three jobs simultaneously: thermal insulation, sound attenuation, and moisture management. Spec the wrong underlayment and your $9-per-square-foot luxury LVP feels and sounds like a budget product. Spec the right one and budget LVP performs like premium.

What Underlayment Actually Does

Three measurable performance values matter. R-value measures thermal resistance — higher numbers mean warmer floors above unconditioned spaces. STC (Sound Transmission Class) measures airborne sound blocking — voices, TVs, music. IIC (Impact Insulation Class) measures impact sound — footsteps, dropped objects. A basic foam roll at 3 mm hits R-0.3, STC 50, IIC 65. A premium cork or rubber underlayment at 6 mm hits R-1.0, STC 66, IIC 72.

Most multifamily building codes require IIC of 50 minimum. Premium condos demand 65 to 72. Single-family homes have no code requirement, but a 6 to 8 dB improvement in impact noise transforms how a bedroom floor feels underfoot to the room below.

Underlayment by Finish Floor

Click-lock LVP, laminate, and floating engineered hardwood demand specific underlayments. Most premium LVP (COREtec Pro Plus, Karndean Korlok, LifeProof Performance) ships with attached 1 mm IXPE — adding more often voids the click-lock warranty. Always check manufacturer spec sheets. Click-lock laminate over concrete needs a separate vapor barrier (6 mil poly) plus a foam or cork underlayment. Nail-down and glue-down hardwood typically use 15-lb felt paper or rosin paper between subfloor and finish. No insulation benefit, but moisture management and squeak prevention.

Radiant Heat Compatibility

If you have hydronic or electric radiant heat in the subfloor, the underlayment R-value becomes a heat-blocking trade-off. For radiant heat applications, specify underlayments rated for radiant — typically thin (2 to 3 mm) with R-values under 0.5. Common field failures: overlapping foam underlayment seams (the bumps telegraph through and cause click-lock joints to fail), skipping vapor barrier on slabs, using thick acoustic underlayment under nail-down hardwood (the compression causes nail tear-out), running underlayment up walls instead of leaving a 1/4 inch expansion gap, and stretching the underlayment instead of letting it lie flat to acclimate.

Cost in Real Projects

For 1,200 square feet of LVP installation: foam at $0.40 = $480. Premium cork at $2 = $2,400. Rubber at $3.50 = $4,200. The premium underlayment doubles the underfoot quality of an entry-level floor and delivers measurable acoustic benefits in two-story homes. For ground-floor installs over solid joists, foam is fine. For upstairs hallways and bedrooms, cork or rubber pays back in livability.

How to Choose

Match underlayment to the finish floor manufacturer’s specification first. Then layer in acoustic and thermal goals. For most residential second-floor work, 6 mm cork delivers the sweet spot of performance, cost, and ease of install. For multifamily and luxury condos, 8 mm rubber or combination cork-rubber meets code and impresses occupants. For ground-floor concrete, prioritize vapor barrier over acoustic — cold telegraphs through any underlayment thinner than 6 mm.
