Sanded grout is the standard choice for most floor tile installations because floor tiles are typically set with joints ranging from 3/16 inch to 1/2 inch.

Unsanded Grout

Unsanded grout has a smoother texture and is designed for joints 1/8 inch or narrower. It is commonly used with polished marble, glass tile, and rectified porcelain set with minimal grout lines. Unsanded grout is stickier and adheres to narrow joints better than sanded grout, which can bridge and leave voids in tight spaces.

Epoxy Grout

Preparing the Tile for Grouting

  1. Remove all tile spacers. Pull spacers from every joint. Leaving them in creates weak spots and color inconsistencies.
  2. Clean out the joints. Use a utility knife or margin trowel to scrape out any thin-set that squeezed up into the grout lines. Grout needs to fill the entire joint depth for maximum strength.
  3. Vacuum the floor. Dust, debris, and dried thin-set chips will contaminate your grout and create a rough finish.
  4. Dampen the joints lightly. Use a barely damp sponge to wipe along the grout lines. This prevents dry tile edges from sucking moisture out of fresh grout too fast, which causes weak joints. Do not soak the joints — standing water will dilute the grout.

How to Mix Grout

Proper mixing is critical. Grout that is too thin will slump out of joints and cure weak. Grout that is too thick will not pack into joints fully and will be difficult to work with.

  1. Pour roughly three-quarters of the recommended water into your mixing bucket first.
  2. Add the grout powder gradually while mixing with the drill and paddle on low speed (under 300 RPM). High speed introduces air bubbles that weaken the cured grout.
  3. Mix until the consistency resembles thick peanut butter. The grout should hold its shape on the float without running, but it should not be crumbly.
  4. Let the mixed grout rest (slake) for 5 to 10 minutes. This allows the polymers and cement to fully hydrate.
  5. Remix briefly without adding more water. The grout will loosen slightly after slaking.

Only mix as much grout as you can apply in 20 to 30 minutes. Once grout begins to stiffen in the bucket, discard it — adding more water (re-tempering) weakens the final product.

Applying Grout: The Diagonal Float Technique

The diagonal float method is the standard professional technique for grouting tile floors. It ensures full joint coverage and minimizes the amount of grout pulled back out of the joints.

  1. Scoop grout onto the float. Load a generous amount along the face of the float.
  2. Hold the float at a 45-degree angle to the tile surface and sweep it diagonally across the grout joints. Moving diagonally prevents the float’s edge from dipping into and scooping grout out of the joints.
  3. Press firmly as you sweep. The goal is to force grout deep into every joint, leaving no voids or air pockets.
  4. Make multiple passes from different angles. Two or three diagonal passes ensure complete packing.
  5. Scrape off excess grout by holding the float at a steeper angle (nearly 90 degrees) and sweeping diagonally again. Remove as much surface grout as possible without pulling material from the joints.
  6. Work in manageable sections — roughly 10 to 15 square feet at a time. This keeps you ahead of the grout’s open time.

Cleanup Timing: The Critical Window

Cleanup timing separates amateur grout jobs from professional ones. Move too soon, and you pull grout out of the joints. Wait too long, and the grout hazes over and becomes extremely difficult to remove from the tile surface.

Initial Cleanup (15 to 30 Minutes After Application)

After grouting a section, wait until the grout in the joints firms up slightly. Test by pressing your finger into a joint — it should hold its shape without smearing. At this point:

  • Wring your grout sponge until it is barely damp (not dripping).

Grouting Around Edges and Transitions

Where tile meets walls, cabinets, or different flooring materials, do not fill the joint with grout. These are expansion joints that must remain flexible to absorb movement. Fill them with color-matched caulk instead.

When to Seal

Wait at least 48 to 72 hours after grouting. Some manufacturers recommend waiting a full 28 days for complete cure before sealing. Check your grout’s data sheet for specific guidance.
